Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch is a Japanese restaurant near Western Dom in Goyang, Gyeonggi. I ordered the 10-piece assorted sushi set by kiosk and enjoyed it with abalone porridge, udon, and side dishes in a calm, tidy setting. Verdict: a satisfying choice when you want a varied sushi meal.

I had plans in Ilsan and decided it had been a while since I last had sushi, so I visited Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch (황제초밥 일산본점). Located near Western Dom, it was an easy place to stop by while looking for somewhere to eat nearby. The interior was generally clean and quiet, making it nice for an unhurried meal.

A quiet, tidy dining atmosphere
When I stepped inside, the atmosphere was calmer than I expected. Sushi restaurants can sometimes feel busy or crowded, but this place was neatly organized overall that day, so I could eat comfortably.

Choosing a 10-piece assorted sushi set by kiosk
Orders are placed using a kiosk. As I looked through the menu, I was a little surprised by how many sushi sets there were. Alongside the standard assorted sushi set, there were sets centered on particular ingredients, such as grilled assorted sushi, tuna assorted sushi, and shrimp assorted sushi, which made it impressive that you could choose according to your taste.
With so many sets available, it seemed like it would be fun to visit more than once and try something different each time. I personally have quite a few kinds of sushi I do not like, so I appreciated the varied selection. It felt like there was plenty to choose from! That day, I ordered the most basic 10-piece assorted sushi set.

They were also running a Naver receipt review event, so I joined in. You could receive fried shrimp for participating, so I made sure to finish my review after the meal. Little events like this somehow always make me want to take part, haha.

A full spread, from abalone porridge to udon
Not long after ordering, the abalone porridge arrived first with the side dishes. Personally, I liked that porridge was included like this. Having warm abalone porridge before getting into the sushi made my stomach feel settled too.

As I ate a little of the abalone porridge, the sushi and udon soon arrived together. Rather than serving only sushi, they included udon too, making it a pretty filling meal.

The dishes served as basic sides were more varied than I expected, too. There were things to snack on while waiting for the sushi, and the croquette and grilled salmon head especially caught my eye.

It was nice to have other dishes to go with the sushi between bites. The fried shrimp from the review event was tasty too, haha. The crispy fried shrimp paired well with everything, and getting the review-event bonus somehow made the meal feel even more complete, haha.

Assorted sushi with a variety to choose from
And finally, the main event: assorted sushi. With 10 pieces, it was a manageable amount for one meal. There was a good variety, so it was fun choosing them one by one, and the balance of rice and fish was easy to enjoy.

Sushi really is more fun when you can eat a little of several kinds instead of sticking to just one. I had a piece at a time, some udon alongside it, and side dishes in between, and before I knew it, the whole spread felt nicely substantial.
Especially that day, being able to have not only sushi but also abalone porridge, udon, and various side dishes made the meal feel more abundant. I had initially visited thinking only about assorted sushi, but after trying this and that alongside it, I ended up fuller than expected.
A filling sushi meal near Western Dom
The restaurant was clean overall, and its quiet atmosphere made it a decent place to chat over a meal. Its location is also a plus when you want sushi for lunch or dinner around Western Dom.
I had the basic assorted sushi set that day, but next time I would like to try a menu centered on one ingredient, such as the tuna or shrimp assorted sushi. Personally, I liked that it was not a meal that ended with sushi alone: the abalone porridge, udon, and side dishes gave me several things to try. There are plenty of menu choices, so it seems easy to pick something even when everyone visiting wants different sushi. Overall, Hwangje Sushi Ilsan Main Branch was a satisfying place for a filling meal with a variety of sushi and accompanying dishes 👍
