Late-night pub in Jecheon: crab with jjolmyeon sari at Maeun Gieok

In short

Maeun Gieok is a spicy bar-food pub on Doksun-ro 11-gil near Jecheon Terminal in Chungbuk, open until 3am, so Maeun Gieok works as a second or third stop of the night. The order was kkotgemuchim (spicy marinated blue crab) in the basic flavor with a jjolmyeon noodle sari and a bowl of rice, and the crab meat was springy with plenty of sauce left for mixing the noodles. The basic flavor builds heat as you eat but stays milder than buldak bokkeummyeon, making it a good match for beer or soju.

૮₍´。・⩊・ 。`₎ა Hi, it's Siming! If you're looking for a place to drink late near Jecheon Terminal, pay attention to this one! A lot of places in Jecheon close surprisingly early, but this spot runs until 3am, so it's great for a second or third round.

Maeun Gieok hours and how to find it near Jecheon Terminal

Maeun Gieok is a spicy bar food restaurant on the 1st floor of 3 Doksun-ro 11-gil, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do. Hours are 16:30–03:00, with no closed days.

Maeun Gieok menu: crab spice levels and noodle sari choices

Menu showing kkotgemuchim spice level and sari options

True to the name Maeun Gieok (spicy memory), spicy dishes like dakbal (spicy chicken feet) in broth and kkotgemuchim are the signature menu items. I ordered the kkotgemuchim basic flavor with jjolmyeon sari (chewy noodle add-on). Kkotgemuchim comes in basic or extra spicy, and you can choose your sari from glass noodles, somyeon, or jjolmyeon!

Menu page with pork cutlet and jjigae/tang dishes

Besides that, there's also a wide range of pork cutlets, steaks, jjigae, and tang (soup) dishes.

Menu page listing bingsu and side dishes

There's also a variety of bingsu (shaved ice) and side dishes, so you could honestly do first round through third round all in one place haha. Looking around at the other tables, a lot of people were having bingsu, and it looked so good visually that I want to try it next time!

How spicy is the basic-flavor kkotgemuchim?

A generously sauced kkotgemuchim set at Maeun Gieok

And here comes the kkotgemuchim. The visual is no joke! The sauce is really generous too.

Basic side dishes of pickled radish and seasoned bean sprouts

For basic side dishes, we got pickled radish and seasoned bean sprouts. Side dishes that pair well with spicy food.

It's crab season right now, and you know kkotgemuchim is trending harder than yangnyeom gejang (soy-marinated crab) these days, right~~~~? Maeun Gieok's kkotgemuchim was well-cleaned and easy to eat, and the meat was packed in quite generously!

Looks so good it's crazy~~~

Beer and soju ordered alongside the kkotgemuchim

Couldn't resist ordering drinks with this visual, so we got beer and soju too!

Tongs and scissors for cutting the crab

They gave us tongs and scissors together, and cut everything into bite-sized pieces for us first.

Plump crab meat squeezed out with sanitary gloves on

Put on the sanitary gloves and squeezed the crab meat out, and it was so plump it was incredibly delicious! This was my first crab of the year, and it was so satisfying! I ordered the basic flavor, and at first I thought 'huh, not as spicy as I expected?' but the heat crept up the more I ate. Compared to buldak bokkeummyeon, the basic flavor is definitely milder. It's not an overwhelming or tongue-burning kind of spicy, just the right amount of heat to go with drinks.

While eating, I really wanted rice, so we added a bowl! They piled the crab meat generously on the white rice.

Absolute rice thief, so delicious~~

Jjolmyeon sari added alongside the kkotgemuchim

Why the jjolmyeon sari is worth adding

And personally, the one thing I really want to recommend is the jjolmyeon sari! The jjolmyeon comes out perfectly chewy, and since the kkotgemuchim sauce is so generous, the sari is a must!

Mix it well into the leftover sauce.

Jjolmyeon sari mixed into the leftover sauce

Mixing the jjolmyeon sari into the leftover sauce is genuinely a delicacy. The noodles come out perfectly chewy and don't get soggy even if you eat slowly!

Crab meat piled on top of the jjolmyeon sari

Topped with crab meat too, yum >_< After trying the kkotgemuchim, the signature dish at Maeun Gieok in Jecheon, I could tell the owner has real skill, so the other menu items are surely delicious too!

Final verdict on Maeun Gieok

If you're looking for good food, a bar, or kkotgemuchim in Jecheon, I'd recommend Maeun Gieok. Being open until late is a big plus, and the quality of the kkotgemuchim was satisfying too. Especially recommended among Jecheon downtown restaurants when you want a proper dish to go with your drinks.

From dinner through second and third round dishes like bingsu and dried snacks, Maeun Gieok in Jecheon has plenty of variety. Be sure to try the kkotgemuchim + rice + jjolmyeon sari combo 😋
