Ulsan Korean BBQ for two in Dal-dong: black pork ogeopsal at Daewol
In short
Daewol Charcoal Barbecue is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Dal-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan that grills Gimcheon black pork over charcoal. Two friends, one down from Seoul, shared black pork ogeopsal (five-layer belly) at 24,000 won for two servings and raw black pork galmaegisal (skirt meat) at 26,000 won for two servings, finishing with soybean paste stew; even the fat grilled up clean rather than greasy, and the galmaegisal was nutty and chewy. Book ahead and the table at Daewol Charcoal Barbecue is set on arrival, which works for a pair or a full work dinner.

This time I made a proper trip down to Ulsan to spend a real night out with Soobin haha. Just getting down there was rough, so suddenly I have a new respect for everyone who commutes between Seoul and the provinces all the time. All the more reason that once I made it to Ulsan, I had to properly unwind at an Ulsan restaurant that's actually good, right? So we headed to a hot spot barbecue restaurant in Dal-dong! Here's an honest review of a Dal-dong meat restaurant in Ulsan that's great for a meal out or a group dinner~~~~~~
Where is Daewol Charcoal Barbecue in Dal-dong, Ulsan?
Daewol Charcoal Barbecue is a Dal-dong barbecue restaurant at 6 Samsan-ro 122beon-gil, Nam-gu, Ulsan, 1st floor. We took a taxi from our hotel and the distance wasn't far at all — a solidly convenient meat restaurant in Dal-dong, Ulsan!

During the day they simmer broth for lunch specials, and in the evening they switch to the meat menu — a genuine local favorite in Dal-dong, Ulsan! Packed with people at both lunch and dinner.
Inside Daewol Charcoal Barbecue: hall and private room seating
The interior of Daewol Charcoal Barbecue was quite spacious, and further in there's a separate room-like space where you can enjoy a more private meal. Worth keeping in mind when you reserve a table!

Fresh black pork delivered from Gimcheon twice a week! Apparently these pigs are raised three months longer than usual before slaughter, so the fat has more of a crisp bite and tastes better.

There's a well-stocked self-bar too, so you can just grab whatever side you need whenever! As expected of a good restaurant in Dal-dong, Ulsan, the side dish lineup was solid!

Since we'd booked ahead, a perfectly set table was waiting for us haha. Everyone reading this, go make that reservation first haha.

They're also running a Naver review event and a repeat-visit stamp event, so anyone living around Dal-dong should go go go.
Daewol Charcoal Barbecue menu and prices: what we ordered

True to its reputation as a top lunch spot in Dal-dong, Ulsan, the lunch menu is well put together too — good value and good quality. And the meat quality speaks for itself~~~
⭐Order⭐
- Black pork belly, 2 servings, 24,000 won
- Raw black pork galmaegisal (skirt meat), 2 servings, 26,000 won
- Dessert soybean paste stew, 6,000 won
- Rice, 1,000 won
- Joeun-day soju, 2 bottles, 5,000 won

1. Black pork ogeopsal (five-layer belly), 24,000 won for two
Until now I thought black pork was a breed only raised natively on Jeju Island, so I was surprised to learn it's raised in Gimcheon too! Because Gimcheon and Ulsan are close, the meat arrives much fresher than pork shipped in from Jeju, so I didn't have to worry about quality at all!

Soobin pulled off a whole performance, saying you have to singe the hairs off the fat like this and grill it a certain way to get it extra chewy haha.

Anyway, after all that process, I took a bite of the chewy grilled belly — I don't usually like fat much, but even the fat was grilled well enough to be free of greasiness or toughness, and it was so good.

As someone who's a stickler for needing rice with meat, wrapping it in a lettuce wrap worked sooo well. Later we also grilled the kimchi that came with the seokbakji (radish kimchi), and — mm, delicious! So so good~~~

2. Raw black pork galmaegisal (skirt meat), 26,000 won for two
Next up, the raw galmaegisal!!! The vegetable skewers that come alongside it are also really solid. I was curious about the seasoned galmaegisal too, but figured the plain version has to be good first before you move on, so — challenge accepted!!!!

No need to even say how good the meat quality was. Soobin handled the grilling from start to finish, and it turns out this woman is basically a meat PhD? She had her own set of principles for everything haha.

Galmaegisal has a slightly nuttier feel, I'd say? The belly wins on chewiness, but the galmaegisal's nutty, chewy texture is outstanding on its own!
Soybean paste stew to finish, 6,000 won
The dessert soybean paste stew came in a generous portion packed with ingredients — it felt less like a dessert and more like a full standalone stew haha. We went through two whole bottles of soju just on this haha.
Is Daewol Charcoal Barbecue worth a visit in Ulsan?
The thick pork belly and chewy galmaegisal we had on what felt like our first real visit to Ulsan really lifted the mood of the trip!! And the owner was genuinely kind, clearly taking care of every detail, so I could see exactly why this place is counted among the famous meat restaurants in Dal-dong, Ulsan!!!! The Ulsan trip has begun!! More Ulsan travel reviews to come!!! 🙏Thanks for the meal today.🙏
