While driving out toward Gonjiam, I went looking for a large café in Gwangju, Gyeonggi and ended up at La Cuesta Gwangju.

The building itself was impressively large, so my expectations were high before I even walked in — and sure enough, inside was a wide, open space with a huge bakery selection, perfect for spending some relaxed time.

The first things that caught my eye walking into La Cuesta were, again, the wide space and the variety of bakery items. The tables are spaced fairly generously and the place itself is big, so it looked comfortable even for a group visit. Coffee alone is nice, but with so many bread options it was fun picking a few things to share.

What I ordered that day

  • Signature latte
  • La Cuesta ice cream
  • Mont Blanc
  • Croissant
  • Olive ciabatta

Here's what I ordered.

La Cuesta signature latte

A cup of La Cuesta's signature latte

First up, my signature latte! Since I was at La Cuesta, I wanted the house specialty rather than just a regular coffee. It was sweet while still carrying real coffee flavor, which made it a great pairing with the bakery items — especially the sweet, nutty Mont Blanc and croissant.

La Cuesta ice cream

La Cuesta ice cream ordered as dessert

I was in the mood for dessert, so I also ordered the ice cream. It was a nice dessert to eat alongside coffee, and adding it made the whole spread feel more varied than just bread alone. A good add-on for when bread and drinks alone feel like not quite enough.

Mont Blanc

One of my favorite items, the Mont Blanc! I loved the layered, flaky pastry texture, and it paired well with the coffee as expected. It's the kind of thing that's hard to walk past in the bakery case just from how good it looks.

Olive ciabatta

A piece of plain olive ciabatta

Eating only sweet bread can get a bit much, so I picked the olive ciabatta too. Its plain, savory base with olive flavor worked well alongside the sweeter desserts. I felt pairing it with something sweet like Mont Blanc or croissant was actually a solid combo.

Croissant

Crispy croissant and coffee on the table

And of course, a croissant felt like a must-order. Crispy outside, soft inside — that classic pastry texture made it perfect with coffee. A sip of latte, a bite of croissant — that's exactly the leisurely café dessert time I was after.

La Cuesta's biggest strength is definitely the sheer size of the space. It felt distinctly different from a typical small café — less a quick coffee stop, more a place to pick out good bakery items and desserts and settle in for a while.
