Table spread of lamb skewers at Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers Taejeon Branch

A hidden gem I visit whenever I'm craving lamb skewers in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju! Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers is a Taejeon-dong favorite, and here's my recommended couple set combo for around ₩20,000 per person.

Location and parking at Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers Taejeon Branch

Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers is located in Taejeon-dong on the 2nd floor of a building! The sign is very shiny and written in big Korean letters, so it wasn't hard to find.

Parking is available in front/behind the restaurant, and if it's full, you can park at Taejeon Sikjaechae Mart, take a photo of your parking, and get ₩3,000 off per hour when you show it.

Since it's on the 2nd floor, you can take the stairs or the elevator, either is fine! I took the stairs as a bit of pre-meal exercise (?), and the climb up wasn't boring at all.

Is there a wait?

As you'd expect from a Taejeon-dong favorite, Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers Taejeon Branch does have a wait. So if you're planning to visit, I'd recommend going a bit earlier than mealtime, or avoiding peak hours! And if you do end up waiting during peak time, there are time-based perks, so it's worth it haha.

Seats with partitions, private atmosphere

As soon as we walked into Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers, a friendly staff member showed us to our seats, and since each seat either has a partition or plenty of space from the next table, it was nice and private to eat.

What we ordered (for 2)

The Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers menu got upgraded ヾ(•ω•`)o There are plenty of à la carte items, but I'd recommend checking the well-put-together set menu first when you come here.

After ordering, cumin/seasoning, pickled mustard greens (jasai), stir-fried peanuts, and kimchi come out, and since lamb skewers take a bit of time, these are great as a simple side snack and palate cleanser!

Basic side dishes of cumin seasoning, jasai, fried peanuts, and kimchi

If your side dishes or sauces run low while eating, there's a self-serve bar set up on one side of the restaurant that's well managed, so you can grab as much as you want without feeling awkward.

Here comes the charcoal~ It's hot, so be careful.

Whole garlic (free once)

My partner's favorite thing — garlic! And Sinbaegok Lamb Skewers always gives it whole, unpeeled, which makes them grin ear to ear haha. Apparently unpeeled whole garlic has a stronger aroma or something like that~

Couple set (for 2) contents

Full couple set spread with lamb skewers and guobaorou

The couple set you can enjoy for around ₩20,000 per person ヾ(≧▽≦*)o The full set includes lamb skewers (original 10p & seasoned p), guobaorou, and cucumber salad (can be swapped for fried rice).

Ten bright red original lamb skewers

Original lamb skewers (10p)

The bright red meat was thick and neatly skewered, so the freshness was obvious just from looking, and it's the essence of essentials — you can taste the plain, unadorned meat itself!

Seasoned lamb skewers coated in red cumin seasoning

Seasoned lamb skewers (10p)

Red cumin seasoning covers every inch of the meat without a single gap! Just looking at it, the spicy, punchy visual is enough to boost anyone's appetite, even if they weren't hungry before~

Lamb skewers placed on the auto-rotating charcoal frame
Lamb skewers grilling with dripping fat over charcoal

When placed on the frame that automatically rotates over the charcoal, bubbles start rising on the surface of the meat and clear fat drips down, which then flares the fire up and adds a smoky char flavor — makes you want to eat it right away 🔥

Fully cooked lamb skewers moved up top to keep warm

Once it's cooked enough, move it right up top so it doesn't burn and just stays warm!

That clean, savory juiciness that bursts in your mouth the moment you bite in! There's absolutely no gamey smell unique to lamb, so it's great even for lamb beginners :)

Cilantro (30g)

Just a few months ago, cilantro was free at the self-serve bar, but apparently it's now charged because of unstable cilantro supply issues these days ㅠ Still, if you love it, you gotta get it!

Fried rice (instead of cucumber salad)

Fluffy, savory-fried carb cheat code! The set normally comes with cucumber salad by default, but I swapped it for fried rice, and there's no extra charge.

Put a piece of lamb skewer on top, or some kimchi, and it fills that missing carb spot perfectly.

Guobaorou

Guobaorou coated in sweet and tangy sauce
Close-up of crispy-outside, tender-inside guobaorou

Crispy outside, chewy inside — the textbook definition of crispy-on-the-outside-tender-on-the-inside. The sweet and tangy sauce is mixed on without going overboard, and it cuts through the richness of the lamb skewers in a fresh, clean way.

Dessert is free

On your way out after finishing your meal, there's free drip coffee and ice cream, so make sure to grab that final dessert!
