Kueodeukkutteu entrance and signage

Kueodeukkutteu is a beloved brunch spot in Haenggung-dong. It's split across the 1st and 2nd floors, and there's also a separate outdoor terrace, so on nice days you can enjoy eating outside too. It's dog-friendly, and I noticed several people there with their pets.

The seating inside is divided up so you can sit comfortably with plenty of space. The menu is pretty varied, covering everything from meals to desserts to ice cream, so you can take care of the whole spread in one place. If you want coffee or dessert separately, the surrounding area works well for continuing on to a nearby café. Parking isn't very abundant given the alley setting, so it's best to use the nearby public parking lot.

Egg in hell, ₩15,000 — enough for two to share

Egg in hell — eggs baked in tomato sauce in the oven — comes with toast on the side for scooping up plenty of the sauce.

With cheese piled on top of the tomato base, the more you dip your bread the more addictive it gets — salty and savory in a way that just keeps you going back for more. Looking at the portion and composition, it seemed like plenty for two people to share. The sauce cools down a bit as you chat while eating, but the flavor doesn't drop off much, so it's a good dish for a slow, talkative meal.

French toast, ₩11,000 — brioche crisp outside, soft inside

The French toast turned out to be brioche-style — sweet and crisp on the outside, soft and puffed up on the inside. There's a generous helping of cream on the side, so one bite dipped in and you get an intense burst of sweetness. The bread itself was well soaked in egg batter all the way through, making 'crisp outside, soft inside' the perfect description for the texture.

Perilla oil ice cream, ₩5,000 — what does it taste like?

Perilla oil ice cream sounded like such an unfamiliar combination just from the name that I was really curious how it would taste. The distinctive nutty aroma of perilla oil comes through subtly over the ice cream, and surprisingly it worked well without any off-putting clash. With perilla seeds sprinkled on top, the sweet-salty combo was pretty unique. The first spoonful felt strange, but after a few more bites I understood why people eat this combination.
