Spicy braised monkfish (agujjim) near Suyeong Station, Busan

In short

Sintongyeong Agu Suyuk.Tang is a monkfish restaurant right by exit 3 of Suyeong Station in Busan. Braving a rainy-day opening rush for two, the writer shared a ₩40,000 spicy braised monkfish (agujjim) with plump, tender fish and a standout sauce that made both the portion and the flavor feel worth it. A solid pick for a spicy dinner or work dinner with a bottle of Daesun soju.

Opening run on a rainy day — what's the vibe like?

It was pouring rain and we were starving, so we did an opening run!! The inside was spacious and clean ✨ The owner was so kind too, which made us feel great ~😍

Spacious, clean seating area inside Sintongyeong Agu Suyuk.Tang

The table already had shot glasses, paper cups and sauces neatly set out ~👏

They also clearly labeled the origin of ingredients, which made me trust the food even more!!👍

After deliberating, we ordered agujjim

The menu board had such a nostalgic feel ~ We were craving spicy agujjim (braised monkfish), so that's what we ordered ✌️ It smelled amazing while it was being cooked in the kitchen haha, we were starving and couldn't wait to eat ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ🤩

While waiting, we spotted the soju fridge!! Keeping soju nice and cold is so important, it was such a charming touch 😆

Banchan and basic table setting

After a short wait, they brought out a delicious, varied spread of banchan (side dishes) ~~🤤 They were exactly the kind of sides that pair with agujjim, and every single one was tasty haha

They also gave us a bowl for the skin and bones, plus tongs and scissors ~

₩40,000 agujjim: how much, how good?

Wow.. when it came out I literally gasped out loud!! Isn't the visual seriously amazing??💯💯 For ₩40,000, isn't that such a steal? The portion was genuinely huge, we were shocked 👏👏

It had been so long since I had agujjim, so I was really looking forward to it, and it lived up to every bit of that expectation haha. The monkfish meat was so plump and meaty that my partner and I kept gasping as we ate..! We even said it might be one of the best agujjim we've had in our lives 😋

The sauce that makes this place stand out

Can you see how plump the monkfish is?? It was so soft and so well soaked in sauce that we didn't get tired of it 😊 And piling on the minari (water celery) and bean sprouts with each bite made it even more delicious!👍 The agujjim sauce here was genuinely special!! It seemed like they had some secret recipe unlike any agujjim I've had before 😳 I think literally anyone would love this. I really recommend it, the sauce is just so good 🤤

We also tried spooning some sauce onto the sweet potato that came with it, and sure enough, since the sauce itself is so good, it went well with everything. The owner really has serious cooking skills!!💕

Soy-wasabi dip available on request

Where I'm from, we usually dip agujjim in soy sauce with wasabi, so I asked the owner for some, and while it was tasty dipped, the sauce here was so good on its own that it was just as delicious without dipping haha. Before I knew it, my hand was just eating it plain 😙 The sauce at Sintongyeong Agu Suyuk.Tang is honestly amazing

Agujjim paired with Daesun soju

With food this good, you've got to have some Daesun soju while you're in Busan. Paired with the sauce you never get tired of and the tender monkfish, it was such a satisfying dinner 👏👏

To wrap up

The banchan were varied and tasty, and the main dish, agujjim, had a generous portion with plump, meaty monkfish that was so delicious 🐟😳🩷 Most importantly, the sauce was so good it left me speechless.
