Weekend-night Korean BBQ with clean restrooms in Jongno: Meongseokjip
In short
Meongseokjip Jongno 3-ga Branch is an outdoor-seating Korean BBQ restaurant in an alley by Exit 4 of Jongno 3-ga Station in Seoul. On a weekend evening, the writer ordered aged pork belly for two (18,000 won), brisket doenjang stew (7,000 won), rice and soju, then refilled kimchi, lettuce, garlic and bean sprouts from the self-serve bar. There is a wait at Meongseokjip, but side dishes and mains arrive fast and even the restroom is spotless, which is reason enough to come back.

It's still a bit hot during the day these days, but once the sun goes down, it's perfect weather for grilling meat outside! And when you think Jongno 3-ga, you think street BBQ vibes, right? Haha. I went to Meongseokjip, a well-known street BBQ spot in Jongno 3-ga, on a weekend evening. Personally, I'd definitely go back, and I recommend giving it a visit : )

Where is Meongseokjip Jongno 3-ga, and how long is the weekend-evening wait?
Meongseokjip Jongno 3-ga is 101m from Exit 4 of Jongno 3-ga Station, just one alley in. Like in the photo above, it's a narrow but atmospheric alley.

Something seems off about this CatchTable waiting number...! It's not actually that bad in reality... haha. I couldn't get in right away, but I didn't wait too long either. There were a lot of people out to enjoy the street BBQ vibe, so I think you just have to accept some waiting.

Indoor seats with an open ceiling: Ikseon-dong charm plus outdoor-BBQ air
Meongseokjip feels indoors but the ceiling is completely open, so even seated inside, you get the full street BBQ feel!! The interior design is really well done. Meongseokjip was even better because you get both an Ikseon-dong feel and a Jongno 3-ga street BBQ feel at the same time.

The street BBQ atmosphere throughout the alleys was incredible. Sitting outside in nice weather with the smell of grilling meat wafting around~ everyone walking by looked like they were thinking 'that smells so good...' haha.

That day I ordered aged pork belly for two + brisket doenjang stew + rice + soju.

The color of the meat looked pretty good even before cooking, right? I was so hungry that day... I was excited even before grilling started haha.

Meongseokjip's basic side dishes and the self-serve bar
The basic side dishes came out nicely too. At most Jongno street BBQ spots, side dishes tend to come out slow or incomplete during peak hours since they're so busy, but Meongseokjip had everything come out fast and neat for every menu item — I was really satisfied!

Extra side dishes are self-serve! There's kimchi, lettuce wraps, garlic, ssamjang (dipping paste), and bean sprouts. I could grab as much as I needed myself.

Grilling the aged pork belly: crisp outside, tender inside
Time to start grilling! Sizzle sizzle... just the sound made my mouth water.

My husband is really good at one thing — grilling meat... he could work a BBQ restaurant part-time...👍🏻

He grilled it together with bean sprouts, kimchi, and garlic on top~ 🥩

Once I tasted it, the meat quality was really good. The outside cooked up crispy while the inside stayed tender — great texture!!! It's tasty just dipped lightly in ssamjang, and also good wrapped with lettuce, garlic, and kimchi. Their ssamjang was really delicious.

Brisket doenjang stew at 7,000 won: the textbook BBQ-house stew
Doenjang stew is a must when eating BBQ! I also ordered the brisket doenjang stew (₩7,000). It came out bubbling in a stone pot, so it looked really appetizing right away.

Inside were brisket and vegetables, and the broth was savory and salty in just the right way to go with meat and rice. 🤤 Exactly what I think of as the textbook flavor of a BBQ-restaurant doenjang stew!

Is the restroom at Meongseokjip clean?
When you think of Jongno 3-ga street BBQ, you might expect the bathroom to be lackluster, but Meongseokjip's bathroom was genuinely spotless~~ There was even a Dyson hand dryer haha.
The food was great, and so was the service — and with the weather being so nice, I really loved the street BBQ atmosphere. It feels like the night temperature is about to drop soon. Enjoy it before the cold sets in ⭐️👍🏻 I'd recommend this as a great spot if you're looking for a date place in Jongno 3-ga, or want to gather with friends for good meat and drinks 🥩🍻
