Namcheon-dong beef restaurant, 800g hanwoo grilled in order: Yong Hanu

In short

Yong Hanu Namcheon Branch is a hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant in Namcheon-dong, Suyeong, Busan, where staff grill each cut for you at the table. The order was 300g tenderloin, 300g sirloin and 200g of the special cut chimatsal (skirt), grilled in that sequence so the differences between cuts were easy to compare, along with king oyster mushrooms cooked in beef kidney fat and Suntory and Hanmaek draft beer. The shrimp-shaped muscle on the sirloin was the pick of the night, and with high chairs and partitions, Yong Hanu Namcheon Branch worked well for a family dinner with kids.

While traveling in Busan, I wanted to have a proper hanwoo (Korean beef) meal, so I went to Yong Hanu Namcheon Branch. The quality of the meat was great, but what really made it easy was that the staff grilled every cut for us.

This time we ordered hanwoo tenderloin 300g, sirloin 300g, and skirt 200g. They grilled tenderloin first, then sirloin, then skirt, and everything was really tender overall — but for me, sirloin was still the best. Especially the shrimp meat attached to the sirloin, which was just next level. I was too busy eating to even get proper photos of it.

We went with kids, and when we ordered rice they gave us seaweed on the side too. With the grilled vegetables and the draft beer, it was a really satisfying meal all around.

A roomy, tidy dining room made for family meals

Right when we walked into Yong Hanu Namcheon Branch, the interior was more spacious and pleasant than I expected.

Each table had its own partition, so there was a sense of separation from the next table, which I liked as well.

For a BBQ place, the atmosphere was clean and well-arranged overall, so it seemed good for a family meal or bringing your parents along. Most of all, we went with kids and having baby chairs made things easy.

Ordering 300g tenderloin, 300g sirloin and 200g skirt

We ordered hanwoo tenderloin 300g, hanwoo sirloin 300g, and hanwoo special cut (skirt) 200g. It all came out at once, and the color of the meat alone looked great.

The marbling on the sirloin in particular was even more insane up close.

King oyster mushrooms, sweet pumpkin, and shishito peppers came out alongside the meat, and the staff grilled everything for us. Hanwoo is such a waste if you overcook it, but since they grilled each cut properly for us, all we had to do was eat — so convenient.

Starting with tenderloin: barely anything to chew

At Yong Hanu Namcheon Branch, they grilled the tenderloin first.

Despite being thick, it had zero chewiness and was really tender. No exaggeration, it basically disappeared after a few chews. It was clean-tasting with soft texture, so it was good for the kids to eat too, and since even the first cut was delicious, I got even more excited for the sirloin to come.

My top pick is the sirloin, and its shrimp-shaped muscle

And then, the sirloin.

I guess I'm a sirloin person, no way around it. The tenderloin was delicious too, but the moment that nutty sirloin flavor hit, I knew this was it. The marbling was so dense that once grilled, the juiciness and nuttiness really came alive, and it was still really tender.

And then the shrimp meat attached to the sirloin.

This was just plain delicious. I meant to photograph it before eating, but after one bite I forgot all about that. It was good enough on its own without dipping into any sauces.

Personally, this was the most memorable thing I ate that day.

Chimatsal (skirt) last: every cut grilled for you

Last was the skirt.

It had a different texture from the tenderloin or sirloin, but it was still tender, not chewy at all. Instead of grilling everything at once, they grilled it so we could eat in order — tenderloin, then sirloin, then skirt — which made it easy to notice the differences between the cuts. They handled the doneness too, setting the well-cooked pieces aside for us, so we could eat comfortably all the way through.

Why beef kidney fat makes the hanwoo taste richer

When grilling the meat, the staff first put tofu suet on the pan to render out the fat.

They explained it's the fat that wraps around the organs, and this fat is nutty, so grilling the hanwoo and vegetables in it definitely made the flavor richer. It wasn't just the juiciness of the hanwoo itself — the nutty flavor of the tofu suet added to it, and it was especially delicious when grilling the sirloin.

The king oyster mushrooms, sweet pumpkin, and shishito peppers were also grilled in this same fat, and I realized there was a reason even the vegetables tasted so good. The king oyster mushrooms in particular soaked up the tofu suet and turned golden brown, making them great to eat between bites of meat.

The hanwoo itself was delicious, but grilling it over the tofu suet made the flavor a notch deeper. This part stuck with me quite a bit too.

The sauces and side dishes at Yong Hanu Namcheon Branch

The side dishes overall came out neatly arranged.

Seasoned pepper side dish made with doenjang sauce

There was Maldon salt plus a few other accompaniments, and honestly the meat was so good that dipping it lightly in just salt was already enough at first. There was also a sauce with yuja (citron) syrup, which paired well with the fattier cuts, and another sauce with little popping grains that was quite unique.

And there was the gochu-muchim (seasoned pepper side dish) that stuck with me surprisingly well. With the bean-like bits, I thought it might be natto at first, but I was told it's a sauce made by blending Korean doenjang (soybean paste) with several other sauces. It had a savory, unusual flavor that went really well with the hanwoo — pretty special.

Kids' rice comes with free gim (dried seaweed)

Going to a BBQ restaurant with kids is always a bit hectic since you have to manage the meat and their rice at the same time.

So when we ordered rice, they gave us seaweed separately for the kids to eat with it. That was oddly touching. Wrapping rice in seaweed and cutting up soft hanwoo for the kids made feeding them so much easier. With baby chairs on top of these small touches, I felt this is a pretty solid pick if you're looking for a place to eat hanwoo with kids in Busan.

Drinks: Suntory Premium and Hanmaek draft beer

You can't eat BBQ without draft beer, so we tried both Suntory Premium draft and Hanmaek draft.

We started with Suntory, which was crisp and clean and paired well with the hanwoo as expected, then followed up with Hanmaek draft. Hanmaek turned out to be surprisingly delicious too. Draft beer quality can vary a lot depending on how it's maintained, but here both had good carbonation and a clean finish — very satisfying.

A bite of nutty sirloin followed by a cool sip of draft beer — perfect. In the end, both Suntory and Hanmaek were delicious. Great to pair with the meat.

Is Yong Hanu worth it for hanwoo in Namcheon-dong, Busan?

Yong Hanu Namcheon Branch wasn't just good hanwoo — the whole meal experience was easy and satisfying. They grilled tenderloin, sirloin, and skirt in order for us, and even the vegetables were grilled deliciously, so there was barely anything for us to do.

Above all, my pick is the sirloin and the shrimp meat. The tenderloin was tender too, but for someone who likes nutty flavors, sirloin won by a landslide for me.

We went with kids, and they had baby chairs, gave us seaweed when we ordered rice, and the table partitions made the meal comfortable. On top of that, the Hanmaek draft was delicious too, so we left full and satisfied. If you're looking for a hanwoo place in Namcheon-dong, Busan where they grill everything for you, this one's worth remembering.
