Rice bowl lunch with mom near Chungmuro: shrimp and pork jowl, Haekbap

Haekbap Dongguk (핵밥 동국대본점) is a Japanese rice bowl and noodle restaurant between Chungmuro Station and Dongguk University in Jung-gu, Seoul. Over an early lunch with mom, the writer had the marinated shrimp bowl set, topped with 6 shrimp and seasoned just right without being too salty, plus a single smoky pork jowl bowl that was mildly spicy enough for heat-shy eaters and generous with the meat. When you can't decide on lunch in Chungmuro, Haekbap Dongguk's marinated shrimp bowl and pork jowl bowl are easy recommendations.

Bangbaedong Ssalguksu Isu Branch (방배동쌀국수 이수점) is a Vietnamese pho restaurant within a 5-minute walk of Exit 10 at Isu Station in Dongjak, Seoul. A dieter looking for something light with a friend ordered bun cha (grilled pork with rice noodles), 4 chicken wings and two plates of summer rolls, 4 pieces each. Verdict: the bun cha at Bangbaedong Ssalguksu won over both the first-timer writer and the bun cha-loving friend.

Wangsimni hair salon clinic for thin, tangly long hair: Uahan Meori

Uahan Meori Wangsimni Centras Branch is a hair salon in the Wangsimni Centras shopping arcade, a 5-minute walk from Sangwangsimni Station in Seongdong, Seoul. For thin, tangle-prone long hair, the blogger had a 3-step clinic (clinic shampoo, moisture and oil replenishment, protein replenishment) done entirely in the shampoo room in about 1 hour, and the damaged ends turned soft while the perm curls bounced back. If home care isn't enough for your long hair, a regular clinic at Uahan Meori is worth trying.

Rainy-day ramen in Yongsan after Fukuoka: dongpo pork set, Menya Seoul

Menya Seoul Yongsan I'Park Mall Branch is a ramen shop in the 7th-floor food court of Yongsan I'Park Mall in Yongsan, Seoul. Craving ramen after a trip to Fukuoka, the writer and a friend visited Menya Seoul on a rainy day and ordered the spicy dongpo pork chashu ramen set (with fried dumplings and cola) and the whole pork belly mazesoba, standing out for tender dongpo pork, a peppery broth and mazesoba rich with chili oil aroma. If you want a spicy ramen that even people who can't handle heat will enjoy, Menya Seoul Yongsan I'Park Mall Branch is a good fit.

Jamsil bar with yuzu pickled radish and gopchang hot pot: Horanggul

Horanggul Bangi Branch is a bar in the Bangi-dong dining alley in Songpa, Seoul, between Jamsil Station and Songpanaru Station, specialising in beef gopchang (tripe) hot pot and beef daechang (large intestine) hot pot. Two friends ordered the beef gopchang hot pot, lifted the lid once the 8-minute timer rang, and saved enough broth to boil the rice-cake noodle add-on at the end, with garlic scapes and yuzu-scented pickled radish as free side dishes. The gopchang portion at Horanggul Bangi Branch was generous, tender and free of any off smell, making it a solid pick for a friends' get-together or a work dinner.
