Seolleung Station gamjatang lunch with fresh chewy rice: Haeseonok

Haeseonok Seolleung Branch (해선옥 선릉점) is a gamjatang (pork bone stew) restaurant near Seolleung Station Exit 5 in Gangnam, Seoul, that promotes a 40-year tradition. After a lash perm near Seolleung Station, the writer had gamjatang topped with soybean powder for lunch and especially loved the cool, refreshing broth packed with bean sprouts, the tender meat and the freshly cooked chewy rice. Haeseonok Seolleung Branch is worth recommending to anyone looking for gamjatang in a clean, cool dining room near Seolleung Station.

Itaewon Station burger lunch: 18mm fries and classic set at Daily Fix

Daily Fix Hannam is a burger shop serving hanwoo (Korean beef) patties in the Gourmet 494 food court on B2 of Nine One Hannam in Yongsan, Seoul, near Itaewon Station and Hangangjin Station. On a weekend date lunch, the writer had a double cheeseburger (15,900 won) and a classic burger set with 18mm thick fries, and loved the beefy hanwoo patties, the special sauce and the moist Belgian fries. Daily Fix Hannam is a handmade burger spot worth recommending for a date lunch in Hannam-dong or Itaewon.

Sinnonhyeon beef soup spot: minari gomtang with rice cakes, Geumnyeong

Geumnyeong Gomtang Yeoksam Branch is a gomtang (beef bone soup) restaurant right by Exit 4 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul, and a branch of the original in Wangsimni. On a chilly evening the writer ordered two regular bowls of minari gomtang (₩14,000 each) and was happy with the fragrant minari (water dropwort), rice warmed in the broth, tender Hanwoo beef and a surprise of sliced rice cakes. For a warm, filling dinner, Geumnyeong Gomtang Yeoksam Branch is worth a return visit.

Seoul Korean BBQ in Euljiro: QR orders and kimchi noodles at Baegyeom

Baegyeom Makchang Euljiro Main Branch is a Daegu-style makchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant right outside Euljiro 3-ga Station Exit 11 in Jung-gu, Seoul. On a first weekend visit, the writer ordered 2 servings of Daegu makchang (₩17,000 per serving) and sweet-and-sour kimchi mari guksu (cold kimchi noodle soup) by QR code, and enjoyed the pre-grilled makchang, the house-made soybean makchang sauce and the free white soybean pulp (baek kongbiji) side. Verdict: Baegyeom Makchang Euljiro Main Branch is a great place for Daegu makchang with no gamey smell in old-school Euljiro surroundings.

Seongsu noodle restaurant: kalguksu and suyuk for two at Ranchalguksu

Ranchalguksu is a Korean restaurant specializing in egg kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), one minute on foot from Exit 1 of Seongsu Station in Seongdong, Seoul. For an after-work dinner for two, we ordered kalguksu at ₩9,000, suyuk (boiled pork) that Ranchalguksu says it boils daily, and yeolmu bibimbap (young radish bibimbap) at ₩8,000, and the meal filled us up with noodles, rice and meat all at once. Ranchalguksu's egg broth, made with vegetable stock and dried pollack, is hard to forget and works for lunch, a hangover meal or a dinner get-together for Seongsu office workers.

Euljiro Korean restaurant: radish-green spicy gomtang lunch, Yangjaeok

Yangjaeok Lotte Department Store Main Branch is a Korean restaurant specializing in pork gomtang (pork soup), on B1 of Lotte Department Store's main store near Euljiro-ipgu Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Over a weekend lunch, one pork gomtang set and one spicy pork gomtang set (₩20,000 each) were ordered and shared. The clear broth, the spicy broth with sautéed woogeoji (dried radish greens), and the jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork), tofu and salted octopus side dishes all satisfied. For a hearty Korean set meal near Euljiro-ipgu Station, the Yangjaeok gomtang sets are a good choice.

Suwon hair salon high layered cut with a roll brush lesson: Uaroom

Uaroom is a hair salon on the 2nd floor of a building in Maetan-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, near Maetangwonseon Station. After 10 months without a cut, the writer had slightly curly long straight hair reshaped into a high layered cut by head designer Soi, and learned to style it at home with a flat iron and a roll brush. With natural layers that still work when tied up and a thorough consultation, Uaroom's high layered cut is worth recommending to anyone who wants a new look without a perm.

Pangyo Korean BBQ, rainy weekend pork neck omakase: Dwaeji Mansion

Dwaeji Mansion Pangyo Avenue France Branch (돼지맨숀) is a han-don (Korean pork) and Iberico pork BBQ restaurant on the first floor of Pangyo Avenue France in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. On a rainy weekend the writer ordered 2 servings of premium han-don Insaeng Moksal (pork neck), extra mushrooms and kimchi stew. Staff grilled the pork neck, and eating it in turn with salt, herring roe, minari, white kimchi and fish sauce felt like a pork neck omakase. The writer called it the best pork neck they had eaten recently and recommends Dwaeji Mansion as a true local favorite at Pangyo Avenue France.

Seongsu café with a red bench: pistachio cream choux at T Coffee

T Coffee is a quiet basement café in Seongsu, Seoul, within a 5-minute walk of Seongsu Station Exit 2 and right next to Pizza Slice Seoul. Sitting on T Coffee's red bench, the writer had two hot americanos with no acidity and a pistachio cream choux (6,500 won), and loved how the rich, firm pistachio cream paired with the nutty coffee. Verdict: if you want a quiet Seongsu café with good coffee and no waiting, T Coffee is the one to try.

Pizza Slice Seoul is a slice pizzeria in basement level 1 of the thisisneverthat building, near Exit 2 of Seongsu Station in Seongdong, Seoul. The writer often visits Pizza Slice Seoul because of memories of Pizza Slice in Tokyo, and this time ate pepperoni, white Hawaiian and the pizza of the day (slices cost 6,200–7,800 won) before continuing the date at T Coffee right next door. With bamboo-view window seats, crispy thin crust and crusts dipped in hot sauce, Pizza Slice Seoul gets both the mood and the flavor right.

Myeongdong pork gomtang restaurant for a heatwave lunch: Baekok

Euljiro tonkatsu restaurant with corn-flavored cabbage sauce: Hunta

Hunta Euljiro (훈타 을지로) is a Japanese-style tonkatsu restaurant right by Exit 1-1 of Euljiro-ipgu Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. On a weekday, the writer ate lunch alone at the bar and tried the loin and fillet katsu set (17,000 won) several ways: with pepper, with mustard sauce and with homemade scallion kimchi. The corn-flavored cabbage sauce and the scallion kimchi kept the meal from feeling greasy to the last bite. Hunta Euljiro is a solid pick for an office-worker tonkatsu lunch near Euljiro-ipgu Station.
