Gwangju charcoal BBQ with torched salchisal beef: Sangnok Hoegwan
In short
Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan-gui Taejeon Branch is a briquette charcoal BBQ restaurant in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, where pork, beef and seafood can be ordered at one table. A weekend family dinner at Sangnok Hoegwan covered a full pork portion (one geun), pork jowl, skirt meat, cartilage ribs and salchisal beef, plus bibimbap, spicy cold noodles and doenjang jjigae, and the highlights were a buldak fire sauce + soybean powder + sesame oil dip and the owner reviving the coals with a torch for the last salchisal. Sangnok Hoegwan Taejeon in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju: a weekend family dinner
Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan-gui Taejeon Branch is a charcoal-grill BBQ restaurant in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, where you can enjoy meat and seafood at the same time. We were trying to figure out where to take the whole family on a weekend evening, and finally checked out this Taejeon-dong spot I'd had my eye on!

It's Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan-gui Taejeon Branch, where you can enjoy meat and seafood together — and to cut to the chase, this is a real, paid-with-my-own-money review after being completely satisfied with both value and taste haha (Superchart discount included~). Weekends and evenings tend to get crowded, so keep that in mind if you're planning to visit!

Maybe because it was a weekend evening, the inside was already buzzing with families and groups out for a meal together!

The tables were spaced out nicely and the interior was pretty spacious, making it a great spot for group gatherings or family dinners. Even in the rush, the staff were super friendly, so it was a great first impression 👍

What's on the Sangnok Hoegwan menu: pork, beef and even seafood
Sangnok Hoegwan's menu lineup
The real reason this place is famous is that they sell pork and beef alongside fresh seafood, so even families with different tastes never have to fight over what to order. We went all out and ordered a wide variety this time!

The basic side dishes are dressed lettuce salad, spicy radish salad and marinated mountain leeks — highly recommend!

The self-bar: wrap greens, sauces and pineapple
This is one of the best-kept self-bars among the BBQ spots in Taejeon-dong. From wrap greens to all sorts of sauces and side dishes, you can help yourself without any hesitation — so convenient. There's pineapple and lettuce too, so grab whatever suits your taste~

Starting with one geun of pork, and that charcoal smoke
We started off (lightly?) with a whole pork platter haha — belly to pork skin, a perfect lineup

Since it's grilled over charcoal, that smoky flavor really coats the outside of the meat — it's an art form. We put on thick pork belly first and nearly died waiting for it to cook ㅠㅠ

To quickly fill our starving stomachs, we ordered an emergency measure — bibimbap, and I was surprised by how hearty the portion was

The first glorious bite was a lettuce wrap — lettuce, kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, a perfect combo

Pork jowl and skirt meat: what order to grill them in
The pork jowl and skirt meat had such a springy texture, and juices burst out with every bite, so we kept inhaling it nonstop...

My sibling told me skirt meat cooks faster than pork belly, so it's a good tip to eat it early — noted, thanks!

Bibim naengmyeon and doenjang jjigae to finish the meal
You know it's practically illegal to eat meat without noodles and carbs, right? The spicy cold noodles (bibim naengmyeon) had that sweet-and-spicy sauce clinging perfectly to the noodles, so alternating a bite of rich meat with a slurp of noodles was like magic that completely reset your palate

We ordered doenjang jjigae with a fried egg to fill up on carbs, and popping that soft-yolk fried egg into it made for a perfect finish.

The dip to try at Sangnok Hoegwan: fire sauce, soybean powder and sesame oil
Anyone reading my blog, you have to try this combo lol 👉 fire chicken sauce + soybean powder + a splash of sesame oil! Dipping the meat in this cuts through the richness perfectly while adding a spicy, nutty kick, so the meat just disappears endlessly. I mean it.

The cartilage ribs had a fun crunchy bite — total perfect match for drinks or as a special treat!

The owner torched the coals back to life for the last salchisal
After working through every kind of meat, we finished with the grand finale — beef skirt steak. But by then, the charcoal had died down a bit, which was almost disappointing.
That's when the owner came over personally and put on a fiery torch show(?), grilling it perfectly for us! The owner's timing was seriously incredible...

Thanks to that, the last skirt steak was so tender it practically melted in my mouth, it was moving 😭

And everyone... on the way out after finishing your meal, there's a slushie waiting for you as dessert, and it's genuinely amazing lol. The sweet, cool refreshment cuts through all the grease, so you leave with your palate perfectly cleansed!
Verdict: the one downside, and would we return to Sangnok Hoegwan?
Final verdict
Everything was great, but honestly the one downside is that because of the charcoal, you can't load up much meat at once — you have to grill it little by little. And as you eat, the fire gradually weakens, which was a bit of a letdown ㅠㅠ (though of course, like with us, it's fixable if the owner performs CPR on the coals with a torch lol)
Even so, considering this price point with such a solid menu lineup, the convenience of the self-bar, and the sweet dessert slushie plus the flawless friendly service, my return-visit intention is 200%! If you're looking for a spot for a weekend family dinner or want quality meat and seafood together, make tonight the night you check out this Taejeon-dong pork belly favorite, Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan-gui Taejeon Branch. Seriously worth every won — I highly recommend this Taejeon-dong gem! 👍
