Chowol Korean restaurant with a sungnyung finish: Oneuldo Utja Chowol

In short

Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a Korean restaurant on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, known for old-style kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and duruchigi (spicy stir-fried meat). A couple arrived on a Saturday at 11:30am and shared the squid and pork duruchigi for two at 28,000 won, plus a cheese king egg roll and freshly cooked sotbap (hot-pot rice), then poured hot water into the pot for sungnyung (scorched rice tea) at the end. Between the whole squid, thick pork belly and stretchy cheese egg roll, Oneuldo Utja Chowol delivered on both flavour and portion size.

This time we visited Oneuldo Utja Chowol, a place we'd heard was famous for its old-style kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and duruchigi (spicy stir-fried meat) for a while now.

Saturday 11:30am at Oneuldo Utja Chowol: just before the queue starts

We arrived at Oneuldo Utja Chowol around 11:30am on a Saturday. The place was already buzzing with customers, and if we'd been a little later, we probably would've had to wait. Customers kept streaming in throughout our meal and takeout orders never stopped either — it made total sense why this place is known as a top restaurant near Chowol Station.

What the dining room looks like

Bright interior of Oneuldo Utja Chowol

The restaurant overall had a clean, bright vibe. The tables were spaced generously apart, making it comfortable for family meals as well as dates or hangouts with friends.

Interior seating with generous table spacing

What struck me most was how customers kept coming in even before the typical lunch rush. Empty seats filled back up quickly during our meal, and steady takeout orders made it clear this is a spot local residents come back to again and again.

There was also a self-service corner and restroom set up inside.

Sotbap isn't included automatically — it's a separate order — but a lot of people order it alongside duruchigi, so we did too.

Squid and pork duruchigi with cheese king egg roll: how it arrives

We ordered the squid pork duruchigi (2 people, ₩28,000), which lets you enjoy both squid and pork together, and added the cheese king egg roll (₩10,000) and sotbap (₩2,000) to go with it.

Soon a big pot of squid pork duruchigi arrived, and it looked incredibly generous even before we'd taken a bite.

Squid pork duruchigi in a large pot

The first thing that caught my eye was the plump squid. Not a small squid — a whole large squid sat in the pot, along with plenty of thick pork belly.

Piled on top with bean sprouts and shredded green onion, it was mouthwatering just to look at.

As it started to bubble and the spicy sauce aroma spread, all I could think about was digging in.

The squid was chewy but not tough, and the pork belly, though thick, was tender to bite into — the texture was really satisfying.

The sauce wasn't overly harsh either — it had a savory depth that kept making us reach for more rice.

Eating it together with the bean sprouts added a nice crunch, and it was also great wrapped in lettuce.

The overwhelmingly large cheese king egg roll

How big is the cheese king egg roll?

The cheese king egg roll we ordered alongside was, true to its name, overwhelming in size from the start.

Cheese stretching as the egg roll is cut in half

When we cut the thick egg roll in half, the cheese stretched out impressively long — the visual alone was enough to make us go wow. The fluffy egg and savory cheese paired really well with the spicy duruchigi.

It softened the spiciness nicely, so it was perfect to eat in between bites of duruchigi, and biting into a big mouthful was fun too.

Freshly cooked sotbap and a sungnyung finish

The sotbap was satisfying too. The moment the lid came off, the smell of freshly cooked rice spread out, and the glossy grains only made us hungrier. Eaten with the duruchigi sauce, we didn't need any other side dishes at all.

At the end, we poured hot water in to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea), which wrapped up the meal in a hearty way. Both my husband and I were satisfied enough that we said, "Next time, let's try the old-style kimchi jjigae too."

Even better, if you order rice matching your headcount, extra rice refills are free :)

Final verdict on Oneuldo Utja Chowol

Visiting Oneuldo Utja, a well-known restaurant near Chowol Station, made it clear why it draws so many customers. The generous squid pork duruchigi, the visually stunning cheese king egg roll, and the warm sotbap together made for a truly hearty meal.

It felt like an easygoing spot for family outings, dates, or meals with friends alike, and since both the flavor and portions were satisfying, it's a place I'd love to visit again.
