Charcoal beef cuts and mul naengmyeon at Gwangju BBQ Sangnok Hoegwan
In short
Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan-gui Taejeon Branch is a charcoal-grill Korean BBQ restaurant in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, where beef, pork and seafood are sold by the 100-gram portion. Three diners shared a so-han-geun beef set (chuck flap, rib finger and skirt steak), 100g of pork intestine, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), rice and mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup), finishing with self-bar pineapple and a dessert slushie. Because each cut comes in small portions, Sangnok Hoegwan works well for a family meal even when one person avoids pork.

Why we chose Sangnok Hoegwan Taejeon Branch for a family dinner
This time we went with my family to Sangnok Hoegwan Taejeon Branch and had a delicious meal, haha. The great thing about Sangnok Hoegwan is that you can enjoy so many different kinds of meat — beef, pork, and all sorts of seafood.
My husband gets a stomachache whenever he eats pork, so we could never comfortably go out for samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) together. But at Sangnok Hoegwan they sell meat in small 100-gram portions at reasonable prices, so each of us could order the type of meat that suited us and grill it in small amounts — really nice.

We went right at opening time, and the restaurant was spacious with lots of tables — it looked great for group get-togethers too. The interior has an old-school vibe.
It takes a while for the charcoal to heat up, so if you make a reservation ahead of time you can start eating faster.
Sangnok Hoegwan menu: beef, pork and seafood by the 100g
Sangnok Hoegwan says, "We select high-quality brands and go through a 6-to-15-day underwater low-temperature aging and thawing process, then keep the best flavor with powerful charcoal heat."

- Pork – pork belly, pork neck, dwitgogi (rear cut), pork jowl, outer skirt (galmaegisal), pork intestine, cartilage rib, pork skin, seasoned pork ribs
- Beef – chuck flap (salchisal), rib finger (galbisal), skirt steak (tosisal), LA-style short ribs, beef intestine, seasoned LA-style ribs, hanwoo yukhoe (Korean beef tartare)
- Seafood – cheese scallop, scallop, sea squirt, fan mussel, grilled abalone, live octopus, horong octopus, salt-grilled shrimp, steamed oyster
There's really such a wide variety to enjoy, so it's great to go with a bigger group.
Pineapple at the self-bar, sea squirt and abalone in the tank
The self-bar had a lot of variety, but what caught my eye was the pineapple! You don't often see restaurants offering pineapple — when grilled with the meat it gets sweet and pairs really well.

Looks like when you order, they scoop out fresh sea squirt right on the spot.

The abalone — all being farmed fresh right at the restaurant.

Fan mussels~ and scallops that look so tasty.

How far the beef set and 100g of pork intestine went for three
We ordered the beef trio, 100g of pork intestine, and for the meal doenjang jjigae, rice, and mul naengmyeon. The pork intestine comes divided into 100g portions, and the amount wasn't small at all — it was nice to enjoy it almost like a dessert on the side.

This is how the basic side dishes come out. My mom said the slightly-frozen mu-saengchae (radish salad) was so tasty.

The beef trio~ chuck flap, rib finger, skirt steak. The portion is generous. The three of us ate until we were completely full and it was so good.

And here's the 100g of pork intestine we got to try as a little extra~

They grill it deliciously over the charcoal fire for you.

How did they know I hate cucumber~~ Felt so understood, haha. I always forget to ask them to leave the cucumber out of my naengmyeon.
Charcoal-fire flavor and where the beef comes from
Sangnok Hoegwan's origin label for the charcoal-grilled meat. The beef we ate was from the US~ good good.

The beef came out grilled perfectly. Cooking it over charcoal gives it that smoky char flavor, which made it taste even better, I think.

They wrap the lettuce for us~ the ribs are cooking away too~ and they bring over the cool, slightly-frozen mu-saengchae to go with it. The pineapple from the self-bar~ grilled, it pairs so well with the meat. Melts right in your mouth.
My husband's favorite, mul naengmyeon~ the quail egg is so cute, haha. Nice and cool noodles~ we ate them together with the beef.

The doenjang jjigae came out~ it had a clam-broth flavor, refreshing and tasty.

The intestines grilled up delicious too. I think the best part is being able to order small portions and try a variety of cuts. If you come with someone who loves seafood there's plenty to eat too — I'd love to try the cheese scallop next time.

Laid out all together like this, it looks even more beautiful.

Meat, noodles, doenjang jjigae, rice — all completely cleared. We ate so well and headed out.

Ending the meal with a dessert slushie
For dessert, they had two flavors of slushie ready, so the two of us shared a glass.

Having slushies too meant we finished the meal on a refreshing note all the way to the end. That's it for Sangnok Hoegwan Taejeon Branch.
