Yeongjong restaurant for cypress steam: Pyeonbaek Hoegwan

In short

Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Main Branch is a restaurant in Yeongjong, Incheon, serving a course of cypress-steamed meat, beef shabu-shabu, kalguksu, juk, and a salad bar. I chose bonito and spicy mushroom broths and especially loved the beef belly rice-paper rolls. A great pick when you want a generous variety of dishes in one meal.

While deciding what to eat in Yeongjong, I visited Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Main Branch, where you can enjoy everything from cypress-steamed meat to shabu-shabu in one go.

When I visited, I found that you could eat cypress-steamed meat, shabu-shabu, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), and juk (rice porridge) as a course, with a salad bar too. It looked like a good place for days when you want to try a bit of everything, especially for family meals or gatherings with a group.

What about parking and the family dining space?

You can use the building's underground parking lot, but it was full when I visited, so I parked at the Jinro Mart lot right next door. The Jinro Mart lot was quite large with plenty of spaces, so it was actually an easy place to park. If the building lot is full, that side should work!

Inside, the restaurant was more spacious and tidy than I expected, and I saw lots of families dining there. Best of all, there is a playroom for children, which seems like a major plus for anyone looking for a family dining spot.

From cypress-steamed meat to the salad bar

The standard course here starts with cypress-steamed meat, followed by beef shabu-shabu, kalguksu, juk, and unlimited access to the salad bar! I started with the cypress-steamed meat, but it does need about 10 minutes to cook nicely rather than coming out immediately after ordering. Time flew by when I picked up food from the salad bar while waiting.

There was corn salad, fries, stir-fried noodles, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), and soup.

There were generous amounts of mung bean sprouts, oyster mushrooms, bok choy, enoki mushrooms, napa cabbage, and other vegetables!

There were also plenty of rice paper, dinner rolls, juk ingredients, broth, wasabi, ramen noodles, and ingredients for Vietnamese rice-paper rolls~~

Such a tidy self-serve bar!! There was plenty of chuck roll and thin-sliced beef belly too~~

Cypress-steamed meat as rice-paper rolls

They opened the cypress steamer right on time~ The meat was light and clean-tasting on its own, but dipping it in the sauces gave it a different flavor! My favorite combination was wrapping meat and vegetables in rice paper and dipping it in peanut sauce!!!

Shabu-shabu with bonito and spicy mushroom broths

After eating some of the cypress-steamed meat, I moved straight on to shabu-shabu. You can choose from bonito, spicy mushroom, doenjang chicken, beef-bone mala, and beef-bone tomato broths, and I chose bonito plus spicy mushroom. It was fun being able to enjoy two broths at once and switch between them depending on my mood.

For shabu-shabu, there are two kinds of meat: mild chuck roll and rich, savory thin-sliced beef belly. Personally, I liked the beef belly more. Lightly cooked and eaten with vegetables, I just kept reaching for it.

Kalguksu noodles to finish the shabu-shabu

And of course, shabu-shabu has to end with carbs, haha. I added chewy kalguksu~~ There weren’t any kalguksu noodles at the self-serve bar, but they brought them right over when I ordered on the tablet!!

Overall, I was happy to be able to eat such a variety of dishes in one place, from cypress-steamed meat to shabu-shabu, kalguksu, and juk. If having just one menu item feels a little lacking, this unlimited course should suit you well.

If you are looking for a place for a family meal in Yeongjong or a hearty Yeongjong shabu-shabu meal, this is worth visiting at least once! With a playroom and fairly ample parking, it was also a good option for visiting with children.

If you want to enjoy shabu-shabu and cypress-steamed meat together near Haneul City, I recommend Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Main Branch as a good restaurant in Haneul New Town.
