Goblin vs Marbling sauce at a Hongdae chicken restaurant: Goobne

In short

Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road is an oven-roasted chicken restaurant on Jandari-ro, between Hongik University Station and Hapjeong Station in Mapo, Seoul, with bar seats and outdoor tables on the first floor and a group hall upstairs. The signature Gochu Basasak (spicy crispy chicken) came plain first, then with the spicy Goblin sauce and the nutty Marbling sauce, and because it was served straight from the oven it stayed warm and crisp in a way delivery never is. Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road works well as a dinner stop in the middle of a day out in Hongdae.

Signature photo of Gochu Basasak at Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road

Looking for somewhere to eat in Hongdae, I ended up at Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road this time. What I ordered was Gochu Basasak, known as Goobne Chicken's signature menu item. When people hear Goobne Chicken, a lot of them think of oven-roasted chicken, and Gochu Basasak in particular is known for its cheongyang chili flavor and crispy texture! Let's get right into how it was eating this signature Gochu Basasak at the Hongdae Red Road location!

Where is Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road, and what are its hours?

Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road is located at 17 Jandari-ro 2-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea, basement and 1st floor. Hours are Sun–Thu 11:00 to 2:00 the next day, and Fri–Sat 11:00 to 3:00 the next day.

Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road is about a 10-minute walk from Exit 9 of Hongik University Station, or an 8-minute walk from Exit 3 of Hapjeong Station.

Outdoor tables and the 2nd-floor group hall: what the restaurant feels like

Exterior of Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road

The 1st floor has bar-style seating, and there's a hall space on the 2nd floor — I noticed a lot of foreign customers too. There's an outdoor seating area as well, which seemed like a great spot given the weather these days.

The menu is basically the same as any other Goobne Chicken, but the atmosphere and the fact that you can try a range of cocktails here felt like Red Road's own unique charm.

If the 1st floor is where you'll find the bar table and outdoor seating, the 2nd floor is a wide interior hall set up nicely for group meals.

The area with sofa seating in particular seemed to draw a lot of group customers.

Gochu Basasak: how oven-roasted chicken tastes straight from the kitchen

I ordered Gochu Basasak and a Coke, and the Coke arrived first.

Gochu Basasak is Goobne Chicken's signature menu item, known for its oven-roasted method, the sharp flavor of cheongyang chili, and its crispy texture.

Goblin sauce vs Marbling sauce: what's the difference?

Gochu Basasak comes with its trusty sidekicks, Marbling sauce and Goblin sauce. Marbling sauce adds a soft, nutty direction of flavor — with the chicken's own chili flavor already there, dipping it in Marbling sauce lets you tone things down toward the milder side. Goblin sauce adds a sharp, spicy kick, so dip into that when you want to push the chili flavor of Gochu Basasak even further.

Since it came out right after ordering at the store, it was noticeably warmer and crispier than delivery — I really liked that.

Gochu Basasak is basically oven-roasted chicken with chili flavor and seasoning added, and I could really taste Goobne Chicken's signature oven-roasted flavor coming through.

First things first, I had to try the Gochu Basasak on its own without any sauce. It's a menu I already like anyway, but piping-hot chicken fresh out of the kitchen just can't taste bad.

After that, I tried it with both the Goblin sauce and the Marbling sauce. If you like spicy food, go for the Goblin sauce; if you want something milder, the Marbling sauce is the way to go.

In the end, I cleaned the plate again today.

Is Goobne Red Road a good dinner stop during a day in Hongdae?

A lot of people come to Hongdae to enjoy shopping, cafés, performances and just walking around the streets, so rather than making a special trip just to eat, people often slot a restaurant into the middle of their day. After wandering around Hongdae, Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road makes for a solid dinner stop. The taste is reliable, and I liked that you also get to feel Hongdae's bright, youthful energy while you eat.
