Main photo from the visit to Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road

On a weekend afternoon at 2pm, I headed to Hongdae wanting to see the Red Road murals and have some chicken with a cold draft beer, so I visited Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road.

How does Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road differ from Goobne delivery?

If you're on the hunt for Hongdae chicken and prefer lighter oven-baked chicken over deep-fried, this place is worth checking out.

When you hear "Goobne Chicken," the first image that usually comes to mind is ordering delivery in your neighborhood. But the Hongdae Red Road location had a pretty different vibe.

The store spans two floors, and being right in the middle of Hongdae, the whole place feels hip and lively.

First-floor open-air seats at Goobne Red Road: good for group dinners?

The first floor has seating that feels like an outdoor pojangmacha-style setup, so on a nice day it'd be great to sit outside and enjoy chicken with a draft beer.

If you're looking for a casual spot in Hongdae to meet up with friends or somewhere for a group chicken-and-beer gathering, it looked like a good option for that too.

When the weather cools down, soaking in the Hongdae street atmosphere with chicken and a cold draft beer sounds like a small after-work happiness in itself.

Price of the Oven Basasak and two-draft-beer set

What I ordered was my favorite item from Goobne, the Oven Basasak!

I ordered it as a set that included two Budweiser drafts, and the price came to ₩29,900.

A whole chicken plus two draft beers for ₩29,900 — that's a great combo for two people to grab chicken and beer after work.

The draft options were Budweiser and Cass, and I went with Budweiser. Draft beer really does go well with chicken.

After a cool, clean sip of Budweiser draft, taking a bite of the Oven Basasak right after made for a great combo.

The Hongdae location has such a good atmosphere that I think it'll come to mind whenever I want chicken and beer. Eating it fresh in the store really did make the chicken crispier, haha.

How Oven Basasak tastes next to deep-fried chicken

The biggest reason I love the Oven Basasak is that it's baked in the oven, so the outside is crispy while the inside stays juicy.

It's noticeably different from chicken with thick, greasy batter. The outside is baked crispy, but when you bite in, the juices are still there and the meat is moist and tender.

Since it's oven-baked, it feels less greasy afterward, tastes light, and the brine wasn't too salty either. Fried chicken is delicious too, but sometimes you crave that particular taste of golden, crispy-outside, juicy-inside oven-roasted whole chicken. That's exactly when Oven Basasak hits the spot. Among Hongdae chicken spots, this felt like the menu item I'd think of on a day I'm craving oven-style chicken.

Three sauces: Chubling, Yobling, and basic sweet sauce

Are the Chubling and Yobling sauces worth 900 won each?

A basic sweet sauce comes included, but this time I tried adding extra sauces separately.

  • Chubling sauce +₩900
  • Yobling sauce +₩900

I especially liked the Chubling sauce. Just from the name, it sounds like it'd be really spicy, but it wasn't, and as I kept eating it, there was a familiar taste somewhere in there — salsa sauce.

Chubling sauce with a salsa-like taste

It's tangy with a slight kick of spice and a lot of umami, so dipping the light, plain Oven Basasak in it completely changes the flavor mood. If you're just eating it plain and then dip into the Chubling sauce, it gives off a bit of that taco salsa, Mexican feel, so you don't get tired of it and keep eating.

The Yobling sauce tasted like yogurt and ranch, and the combo with Chubling was awesome... Personally I'm not great with spicy food, so I think I'll keep ordering the Oven Basasak + Chubling + Yobling sauce combo again.

Chicken and beer in Hongdae: is Goobne Red Road worth a visit?

Hongdae has tons of chicken restaurants and even more bars, but I liked that Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road lets you enjoy the familiar delivery-Goobne menu we all know, but fresh, crispy, and warm in-store with a draft beer.

The space is split across two floors with outdoor-style seating on the first floor, so it's a good spot to remember when you're looking for outdoor seating in Hongdae. On a nice day, I'd love to sit at that first-floor outdoor seating and eat.

If you like chicken that isn't too greasy, like the Oven Basasak, it goes great with draft beer. Crispy outside, juicy inside chicken, dipped lightly in Chubling sauce, and a cool sip of Budweiser draft!

The Oven Basasak + 2 Budweiser drafts set I had that day was ₩28,900, which made for a solid setup for two people to casually have chicken and beer.

It seems like a good place to stop by on a day after work when you're thinking "should I have chicken and a beer today?", when you want a simple first round meeting a friend in Hongdae, or when you're looking for a group dinner spot for chicken.
