What a properly healing Jeju trip! When you’re traveling around Jeju, there are days when you just want a drink in the evening with some delicious snacks on the table, you know?

Evening drinks on a Jeju trip

Exploring bars in Yeon-dong, Jeju

This time, the place I found while looking up good spots in Yeon-dong was Jumo (주모).

Visiting Jumo in Yeon-dong, Jeju

It was already famous as a neighborhood favorite, so I booked ahead. Above all, the yukhoe (Korean-style raw beef) and grilled blue crab we had that day were better than I expected, and adding makpuccino made for a pretty great combination too, haha.

A bright, tidy atmosphere

Once I went inside, the space was brighter and more neatly arranged than I expected.

The areas around the tables were not cluttered, and the whole place felt comfortable, making it easy to sit and chat. Even if the food is good, I find it hard to stay long when a place feels too hectic, but Jumo did not have that pressure.

Jumo snack menu and what we ordered

Looking over the menu, there was quite a variety of drinking snacks: half yukhoe and half shrimp, raw sweet shrimp sashimi, butter-grilled sweet shrimp, grilled blue crab, whole squid bibim noodles, yukhoe with gamtae (seaweed) rice balls, spicy roe jjamppong, and beef yukjeon (pan-fried beef).

That day, we ordered yukhoe, grilled blue crab, and makpuccino.

The yukhoe was my favorite

I tried the yukhoe first, and personally, it was my favorite thing I had that day.

Tender yukhoe at Jumo

The yukhoe was tender rather than chewy. Once I mixed in the egg yolk, sesame oil, chopped scallions, and ground sesame salt, a lovely nutty aroma came through. It was good on its own, but wrapping it lightly in gim (roasted seaweed) brought out even more flavor.

Rather than being aggressively sweet or salty, it felt like it let the ingredients shine, so it was great for picking at little by little with a drink. This reminded me that snacks like these are worth considering when looking for good places in Yeon-dong, Jeju.

Grilled blue crab and makpuccino together

Another unexpectedly memorable dish was the grilled blue crab. I did not have huge expectations at first, but after one bite, its lightly salty, savory flavor had me reaching for it again and again, haha. The crab meat itself was mild, but grilling added extra depth, so it was good even on its own. It was especially nice with the makpuccino.

Taking a sip of makpuccino after the grilled blue crab naturally carried on from that salty taste, and they suited each other much better than I expected. It is not a pairing I would normally think of, but after trying it, I could see why it works.

I had originally visited while looking for Jeju raw sweet shrimp sashimi, but chose the yukhoe and grilled blue crab that day. Next time, I would like to try the daily limited raw sweet shrimp sashimi too.
