Jeju mackerel wrap rice near Hamdeok Beach: Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap

In short

Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap is a Korean restaurant near Hamdeok Beach in Jeju City. We ordered the 2-person mackerel wrap rice set for 36,000 won, with plump mackerel, well-fermented kimchi, wrap vegetables, and soy sauce marinated crab. Verdict: a filling Jeju-style fish meal with especially memorable mild mackerel and kimchi broth.

While looking for a good restaurant in Jocheon, I visited Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap (제주섬고등어쌈밥) in Hamdeok. The mackerel was thick and tender, nicely soaked with tangy aged kimchi and a sweet-spicy seasoning, while the generous side dishes, including soy sauce marinated crab, made for a hearty meal.

Near Hamdeok Beach

Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap is near Hamdeok Beach, so the location was great. It is an easy place to stop for a meal after looking around the sea in Hamdeok, and it was convenient even by car because we could park beside the restaurant. We drove there too, parked, and went straight inside. If you are looking for somewhere to eat near Hamdeok Beach, the location alone makes it worth noticing. 😊

The restaurant atmosphere and window seats

Once inside, the restaurant was neat overall. There were plenty of tables, so it did not feel awkward for two people to dine, and it looked suitable for a larger group too. In particular, the window side overlooks the Hamdeok sea, so it would be lovely to eat while looking at the water on a nice day. There were customers seated by the window when we visited, and I could understand why people passing by looked inside and came in.

Mackerel wrap rice menu and prices

Looking at the menu, there were more options than I expected. Along with the signature mackerel wrap rice, there was black pork duruchigi (spicy stir-fried pork), braised cutlassfish, grilled mackerel, and grilled tilefish. They also had soups and stews worth trying in Jeju, including sea urchin seaweed soup, abalone hot pot, and cutlassfish soup. Since there were two of us, we ordered the 2-person mackerel wrap rice set without hesitation. It was ₩36,000 for two, or ₩18,000 per person.

A full table for two of mackerel wrap rice

After a short wait, the food arrived as a full table spread. It looked quite generous for two people. There was plenty of mackerel and kimchi, along with wrap vegetables and appetizing side dishes. Of course, the mackerel was what caught my eye first.

The mackerel was really plump

There was a nice thick layer of flesh on the mackerel, so it was easy to pull apart with chopsticks. Mackerel can sometimes have a strong fishy taste if it is not done right, but I barely noticed any fishiness when I ate it!! So good 😍 The flesh itself was mild too, so it worked well with the seasoning.

Kimchi and wraps are delicious any way you eat them

The kimchi underneath the mackerel was the well-fermented kind too. The flavor and seasoning from the mackerel had soaked into it, and mackerel flesh and kimchi together over rice were a great match. Maybe because the mackerel itself was mild, I personally found it tastier to eat the flesh on its own rather than adding lots of kimchi or wrap vegetables. My friend, on the other hand, said it was delicious wrapped up. Mackerel and kimchi on wrap vegetables definitely had a different appeal. I think this really comes down to personal preference.

Can you see how much aged kimchi there is? Amazing!!

The soy sauce marinated crab was a quiet standout

Another memorable basic side dish was the soy sauce marinated crab. Usually, I picture just one or two small pieces of crab at a mackerel wrap rice restaurant, but these were bigger than expected. There was a decent amount of meat too, so it was good with rice. My friend told me to try wrapping the crab as well, and that was quietly good too. I preferred the mackerel plain, but putting the soy sauce marinated crab in a wrap was a nice treat. So good 🥰

It fills you up more than expected

The two of us had the 2-person mackerel wrap rice set, and we got much fuller than expected. The mackerel was so plump that eating it with rice filled us up quickly. The kimchi was delicious too, but there was quite a lot, so we left a little. 🥲 The mackerel felt too precious to waste, so I picked off almost all the flesh, haha. I thought men might be fine adding another bowl of rice!! With rice, mackerel, and kimchi together, people who love rice might find one bowl a little lacking.

A mackerel meal in Jeju

After trying it, I understood why people seek out mackerel wrap rice in Jeju. Even without ordering a lot of different things, plump mackerel with kimchi and wrap vegetables made for a very filling meal. Most of all, there were no customers when we first arrived, but several groups came in soon after, so it seemed like locals come here for meals too. There was a mix of solo diners, families, and larger groups, which made it feel comfortable to visit. If you are looking for Jeju-style Korean food or fish dishes near Hamdeok Beach, I thought it was a solid Jocheon restaurant choice!

Deliciously fermented kimchi and mackerel
The mackerel was delicious, but the kimchi was wonderfully fermented too.

If I visit again, I would like to try another menu item, but I think I would still order the mackerel wrap rice first. After having it this time, I could see why it is the signature dish. The mackerel flesh was truly plump, and what I remember most is mixing rice into the kimchi broth. With mackerel flesh and kimchi together on top, one bowl of rice disappeared in no time.
