Jeju indoor media art for rainy days: Nohyeong Supermarket

You know how awkward it is when you have your whole Jeju trip planned and then a rain forecast suddenly pops up? 😥 I was hoping to see the sea and climb an oreum (volcanic cone), so I added somewhere I could properly enjoy indoors in case the weather did not cooperate! That place was Nohyeong Supermarket (노형수퍼마켙)! I thought it would be a media-art exhibition where you watched a few videos and left, but it was much bigger than expected, and every room had a completely different mood, so it was really fun :)

Since re-entry is not allowed, it is best to use the restroom and take care of anything you need before going in.

Nohyeong Supermarket starts in black and white

The first place you encounter after entering is, true to its name, a “supermarket.” But rather than the colorful market we normally imagine, the entire space is black and white, so the atmosphere shifts the moment you step inside.

It had the retro feeling of stepping into an old-fashioned supermarket, and browsing the shelves and signs was fun too, making it great for photos.

Especially here, I think colorful clothes would stand out against the black-and-white setting and make photos even prettier 📸 Rather than simply passing one photo spot, it was fun to follow the world-building and wonder, “Why is everything here black and white?”

Light and color change beyond the Forgotten Door

After the black-and-white supermarket comes the Forgotten Door. It is an important space that carries Nohyeong Supermarket’s story forward, and once you pass through it, the lighting and colors gradually begin to change.

If the earlier rooms were black and white, this is where light and video really begin! Personally, I would recommend putting your phone down for a moment and taking in the space itself rather than only taking photos. The mood before and after this point is so different that walking through it yourself is much more fun.

What is Nohyeong Multiverse?

A little farther along, you reach the main space I had been looking forward to most at Nohyeong Supermarket: Nohyeong Multiverse! Nohyeong Supermarket is currently running Season 3, “Nohyeong Multiverse.” According to its official information, 360-degree media art unfolds in a space of about 1,200 pyeong, or roughly 4,000 square meters, with a maximum height of 20 meters.

Once you are inside, it is not just the walls that become screens; video and light continue onto the floor, making the whole space look as if it is moving. Scenes keep changing—from Jeju’s four seasons to a dimension of famous paintings, a glowing swamp, a gap between sea and time, and a warped city—so the mood keeps shifting even when you stay in one place.

Why I stayed longer than expected

When traveling in Jeju, some media-art exhibitions are places where you take a few pictures and leave quickly, right? But at Nohyeong Supermarket, the videos keep changing, so it felt a shame to see it once and move right on. Even in the same spot, the atmosphere changed completely with each scene, so I sat and watched for a while, then took photos again when a beautiful scene appeared... Before I knew it, more time had passed than expected. So if you add it to your Jeju itinerary, I recommend allowing about an hour rather than just popping in for quick photos :)

Nohyeong Dabang and Nohyeong General Store after the exhibition

After finishing the exhibition, you can also look around Nohyeong Dabang and Nohyeong General Store.

It did not suddenly turn into an ordinary café when the exhibition ended; the black-and-white concept of Nohyeong Supermarket continued here too, which was fun 😀

The official site also introduces Nohyeong Dabang and Nohyeong General Store as places with a “lost color” concept. If it feels too soon to head straight to your next stop after the exhibition, this would be a nice place to take a short break.

A Jeju indoor attraction worth visiting whatever the weather

Nohyeong Supermarket was a worthwhile place to visit in Jeju-si, whether it was raining or not. From the black-and-white supermarket to the dazzling Multiverse, each space had a different atmosphere, making it fun for photos and offering more to see than I expected ✨

If you are looking for a different kind of indoor attraction during a Jeju trip, it is worth visiting at least once—save this for when you are planning your Jeju travel :)
