Friday dinner in Sintanjin, Daejeon: two sets at Baengnyeon Boribap

After work on a Friday, before heading back up to Seoul, I decided to grab a hearty dinner in Daejeon first. I was trying to figure out what to eat before hitting the highway, and that day I was really craving a proper Korean meal — so here's where I found!

This is Baengnyeon Boribap (백년보리밥) in Sintanjin, Daedeok-gu, Daejeon. It's a place where you can get barley rice with all kinds of banchan, plus pork or mackerel on the side, so it seemed like a solid option for a filling meal before hitting the road.

Baengnyeon Boribap is on the 1st floor of 358 Sintanjin-ro, and the first thing that surprised me on arrival was how huge the place actually was! The parking lot was also pretty spacious, so I could drive there and walk in without worrying about parking.

Once I stepped inside, the interior turned out to be even bigger than it looked from outside. There were tons of seats and the space was really roomy, so it seemed great for family visits or dining with a large group.

12 banchan as standard, with a self-serve bar for refills

At Baengnyeon Boribap you basically get 12 banchan (side dishes) as standard, and the lineup changes a bit depending on the season. As I looked around the restaurant, one thing caught my eye first — the self-serve bar!

If you want more banchan, you can go help yourself to as much as you like at the self-serve bar.

The method is simple. Take the bowl from your table, and just take what you can actually eat, in the amount you'll actually eat! At first I wanted to try everything, so I piled it all on — and ended up with so much food on the table I got a little dizzy 🫨 Still, it was definitely nice to be able to pick as many side dishes as I wanted.

What we ordered: the pork bulgogi set and the grilled mackerel set

We ordered two set meals that day: the siraegi (dried radish greens) bone soup barley rice pork bulgogi set (₩14,900) and the siraegi bone soup barley rice mackerel set (₩14,900).

When the food came out, the table was seriously packed. Hot, rich siraegi bone soup, barley rice, mackerel, pork bulgogi, and all sorts of banchan!

I started with the siraegi bone soup, and the broth was hot and rich — perfect for a cooling-down evening, I felt like my whole body just melted haha. The grilled mackerel and stir-fried pork also came together, so it was nice to pick and choose depending on the mood.

The barley rice is good on its own, but I mixed in banchan from the self-serve bar to my taste, plus gochujang (red chili paste) and sesame oil, and stirred it all together. With all those side dishes added in, my bowl of bibimbap ended up being pretty generous too haha.

Is ₩14,900 a fair price for this spread?

One of the most satisfying things about Baengnyeon Boribap was the value for money. For ₩14,900 you get the barley rice set, siraegi bone soup, pork or mackerel, a variety of banchan, and access to the self-serve bar — it made for a genuinely filling meal.

Dessert too: misugaru at the end of the meal

Once you finish eating, there's dessert waiting too. There's misugaru (roasted grain powder drink, my personal favorite ♥) and some simple snacks 🥠

The snacks could also be purchased separately. Factoring in the dessert and the self-serve bar, ₩14,900 felt like a really solid deal for this whole meal.

Service at Baengnyeon Boribap: friendly and thoughtful

And just as memorable as the food was how friendly the staff were 🧑🏻‍🍳 Even though it's a big place, they were attentive to the little things and handled everything kindly, which made the meal that much more pleasant.

On one wall of the restaurant, there was a note about what Baengnyeon Boribap wants to convey. Like the phrase 'a storehouse where care accumulates,' it carried the meaning of putting time and effort into every bowl of rice, and building a warm table that lasts. Eating there, I could genuinely feel a bit of that spirit in the staff's service.

If you visit with a pregnant guest, a soldier, or someone celebrating a birthday, you get a 10% discount, and there's everything from small things like basic medicine and floss to birthday party supplies you can borrow! 🎉 This was the first restaurant I'd seen go this far, and honestly it left an impression. Seeing this kind of attention to detail beyond just the food made it feel like a place that genuinely wants guests to eat comfortably and leave happy.

Final verdict: is Baengnyeon Boribap good for a family meal in Sintanjin?

Baengnyeon Boribap turned out to be a great place for a hearty, filling Korean meal. You can mix barley rice with whatever banchan you like, and with pork bulgogi or mackerel plus siraegi bone soup all coming together, the table was seriously packed 🍖 Above all, this kind of spread and service for ₩14,900! Personally, I thought the value for money was really solid.

With a big parking lot, a spacious dining room, plenty of seats, and genuinely friendly staff, it seems like a comfortable spot to visit with family or a larger group.
