My boyfriend and I had some errands near Balsan Station and stopped by a well-known eel restaurant nearby, Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel (장수촌 풍천장어). I'd been craving eel for days, and I left completely recharged and full haha.

The interior was spacious with lots of tables, so it looked great for family gatherings or company dinners too. We came before the dinner rush so we were seated right away.

They also sell eel extract (jangeojeup), said to be good for immunity and anti-aging.

Open, airy window seat table

We sat at the window seat! It felt open and not stuffy at all, and the cool breeze was so nice.

The side dishes were lettuce salad, salad, lotus root, perilla leaves, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), ginger, garlic, and ssamjang (dipping sauce). While waiting for the eel on an empty stomach, we ate the salad first. I liked that the banchan weren't too heavily seasoned.

We ordered the 1kg salted grilled eel. The ₩3,000-per-person table setting fee felt a bit pricey at first, but since staff grilled everything for us, it didn't feel overpriced once I thought about it.

They laid the eel down and sprinkled pink salt all over it, flipping it constantly so it wouldn't stick to the grill.

The thick eel flesh looked so plump and delicious.

How the staff trim the eel

They also neatly trimmed the fin parts with bones.

I was so hungry I was practically drooling while waiting haha.

After the first round of grilling, they cut it into bite-sized pieces for us. I was so thankful that they handled the entire process — we could just relax and eat.

Doesn't the eel look so tasty all golden brown?

They flipped it and grilled the other side too,

then set it right in front of us, ready to eat.

The complimentary eel soup

We got a free eel soup with plenty of perilla powder and siraegi (dried radish greens) — savory and rich with no fishy smell at all. It really felt like a proper energy-boosting meal.

How does the eel taste in a ssam (lettuce wrap)?

We wrapped it in perilla leaves with ginger on top,

and also ate it with just ginger, enjoying the eel ssam in different ways! It was crispy outside and tender inside, so the texture got better the more you chewed, and the eel's signature deep, savory flavor really came through. It wasn't overly strong or greasy — the natural taste of the eel shone through.

The free eel extract to take home

They also gave us one eel extract pouch each. I'm planning to heat it up at home~ haha.
