Dombe naengsuyuk with wasabi and mu-mallaengi at Handam Guksu, Jeju
In short
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a beef-bone pork noodle and cold sliced pork restaurant on Aewol-ro in Jeju's Aewol area. Seated by the floor-to-ceiling window with a full view of the sea, the dombe naengsuyuk (cold sliced pork) was paired with wasabi, kimchi, and self-serve pickled dried radish, alongside a rich beef-bone pork noodle soup. Odor-free cold pork and a broth brightened by bean sprouts were the highlights of this meal.

A bowl of pork noodles on an Aewol road trip: Handam Guksu
Driving around Jeju's Aewol area, you can catch ocean views, hit up aesthetic cafés, and stop by good restaurants all in one trip — that's why it's such a popular route for travelers. I'd heard there was a solid pork noodle restaurant in Aewol, so I checked it out. It's called Handam Guksu (한담국수). It's close to the Handam Coastal Walking Trail and the Aewol Café Street area, which makes it a convenient stop for a meal while sightseeing.

The Jeju sea through a floor-to-ceiling window
Handam Guksu had that laid-back Aewol vibe. Walking in, there's nothing blocking the view — a huge window opens right onto the Jeju sea, and it was way more stunning than I expected. The ocean stretched out so wide that I ended up just staring out the window while waiting for the food, time flew by.

Dombe naengsuyuk, best with a touch of wasabi
Along with the pork noodle soup, I ordered the dombe naengsuyuk (cold sliced pork). Dombe pork is a must-try dish in Jeju, and here you get to enjoy it cold-style, which pairs really well with the noodle soup.

The cold pork arrived on the plate thinly sliced and looking delicious — pass!

I picked up a piece and it wasn't dry at all — soft and tender to bite into. Unlike the hot noodle soup, the cold pork was clean and light. A small dab of wasabi right on top of the meat, rather than a lot, was just right. You still got the savory flavor of the pork, plus the sharp kick of the wasabi on top, and it was the kind of combo you keep eating without ever feeling greasy.

Rich beef-bone pork noodle soup — the bean sprouts are the secret weapon
The rich beef-bone pork noodle soup at Handam Guksu looked amazing from the start, with its milky, deep-colored broth. It had that savory, deep beef-bone flavor, but it wasn't just heavy and thick — I liked that. The broth was loaded with pork, green onion, and bean sprouts, so every spoonful had a refreshing, clean quality to it too.
Thanks to the bean sprouts especially, the heaviness typical of a thick beef-bone broth got balanced out, and the soup tasted a lot cleaner overall. At first the savory, rich beef-bone flavor spreads through your mouth, and then the refreshing notes from the green onion and bean sprouts rise up subtly as you go, which keeps you sipping the broth nonstop.

Self-serve bar — don't skip the pickled dried radish
The self-serve bar was clean and well maintained, which added to my trust in this Aewol restaurant. You could easily grab whatever side dishes or basics you needed. The kimchi, chili peppers, and pickled dried radish (mu-mallaengi jangajji) were so good I went back for more a few times. Try the pickled dried radish with the dombe pork — highly recommend!!

A generous sprinkle of pepper on the pork noodle soup

That milky broth color

I also tried the dombe naengsuyuk with kimchi, and the tangy, salty kick of the kimchi really woke up the flavor against the soft, mild pork. The plainness of the meat on its own paired so well with the crisp, clean taste of the kimchi that I kept reaching for more.

How were the noodles and the portion of meat?
The pork portion was generous too, so eating it together with the noodles made for a filling meal! A tender piece of pork with the noodles, plus some bean sprouts on the side, gave the dish more texture variety and made every bite fun. The noodles had soaked up the rich broth well, so every slurp brought that savory broth flavor right along with it. Noodle texture really matters in a pork noodle soup — and Handam Guksu's noodles tasted even better eaten together with the broth. They weren't mushy or overcooked, they kept a good amount of springiness. But they weren't chewy or stiff either, so they were easy to slurp down.

What I liked most about Handam Guksu was that the pork had none of that distinctive pork odor. Dombe pork can develop an off smell if it's not boiled properly to remove that odor, but here it was cleanly prepped and boiled, so it tasted really clean.

The broth wasn't overly salty or harsh, so I kept drinking it. It's a beef-bone broth so it's rich to begin with, but adding bean sprouts was really the secret move — it made the broth feel twice as refreshing.

Overall thoughts on Handam Guksu
Being able to eat while looking out at the Jeju sea was such a great part of the experience at Handam Guksu. The pork noodle soup broth was especially good — rich and savory, with pork, green onion, and bean sprouts adding a refreshing edge. The dombe naengsuyuk was also clean, light, and tender with no off odor, so it's easy for anyone to enjoy. Recommended if you're looking for a hearty, delicious meal in Jeju Aewol.
