Pork noodles with jeotgal-scented kimchi and mandu for two: Handam

While exploring near Aewol Cafe Street on a trip to Jeju, I stopped by Handam Guksu for lunch.

Since I was in Jeju, I figured I had to try gogigguksu (pork noodle soup) at least once, and this place is near Handam Beach and lets you eat with a view of the sea, so I decided to check it out.

Beyond gogigguksu, the menu had bibim noodles, mandu (dumplings), dombe pork, and tteokgalbi, so it seemed like a good place for a group where everyone could pick their own dish.

Location near Aewol Cafe Street

Handam Guksu sits near both Aewol Cafe Street and Handam Beach, making it easy to drop in for a meal while sightseeing nearby.

When traveling around Aewol in Jeju, cafes and restaurants tend to be visited together, and since it's close to Handam Beach, it's also a nice spot for a walk before or after eating.

How we handled parking

There was a small parking space right in front of the restaurant, but it could only fit a few cars.

Instead, Handam Guksu supports 1 hour of free parking if you use the Handam Public Parking Lot or the Landy's Donuts parking lot.

For anyone driving around Aewol, parking can be a bit of a hassle, so being able to use a nearby lot with 1-hour support made the meal much more relaxed.

Ocean-view seating

Walking inside, the floor-to-ceiling window seats with a distant view of the sea immediately caught my eye.

There were both ocean-view seats and regular seats, mostly arranged for four people, making it a good layout for families or friends.

I only came for a bowl of noodles, but seeing the Jeju sea through the window definitely made it feel like a proper trip meal.

Side dishes from the self-serve bar

Instead of staff continually bringing out side dishes, you help yourself to as much as you need from a self-serve bar.

Kimchi, jangajji (pickled vegetables), peppers, and ssamjang (dipping sauce) were all set out, so I could easily grab more whenever I ran low.

Kimchi matters a lot when eating noodle dishes, and that day the kimchi was quite tasty, so I kept going back for more.

The menu was more varied than I expected

The menu ranged from basic gogigguksu to dongchimi bibim noodles, mala pork noodles, and lean pork rice soup, plus other noodle and rice dishes.

There were also side dishes like dombe pork, tteokgalbi, and mandu, so anyone who didn't want to stop at just noodles could easily add more.

They also sell Jeju makgeolli and craft beer, which seemed nice for anyone wanting a daytime drink alongside Jeju food.

Photo review event and family-friendly touches

On one side, there was signage for a photo review event.

Writing a Naver photo review gets you a Jeju specialty Crunky snack, which seemed worth doing after the meal.

Naver reservations are available too, and the restaurant welcomes families, with high chairs on hand — worth knowing if you're traveling in Jeju with kids.

What we ordered for two

We ordered gogigguksu, dongchimi bibim noodles, and mandu.

We initially considered dombe pork too, but with so many options on the menu, we settled on two noodle dishes plus mandu on the side.

It turned out to be quite a lot of food for two, and we left absolutely stuffed.

Dongchimi bibim noodles

We started with the dongchimi bibim noodles.

The noodles came topped with shredded pork, bean sprouts, cucumber, and seasoning sauce, along with a side of dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth.

You could eat it mixed like regular bibim noodles or add the dongchimi broth partway through, so one dish gave you two different ways to enjoy it.

It was hearty thanks to the generous pork, and the tangy-sweet seasoning really woke up the appetite.

The dongchimi bibim noodles came with a fairly large amount of pork.

The shredded pork mixed well with the noodles, adding a nice bite to the texture, and the tangy-sweet seasoning kept me reaching for more with my chopsticks.

Rather than just having gogigguksu in Aewol, Jeju, ordering a bibim noodle dish alongside it meant we could each enjoy a different flavor — a good option when visiting as a pair.

Gogigguksu (pork noodle soup)

Then came the gogigguksu I'd been looking forward to — the pork on top was quite generous, and the amount of noodles was genuinely huge.

It tasted great at first so I kept eating, but the portion was bigger than expected, and I ended up leaving a little noodle behind.

The broth was a bit salty, but the thin noodles matched it well, and the noodles themselves were soft and delicious.

Eating the pork and noodles together made for a filling bowl on its own, so it should suit anyone looking for a hearty gogigguksu in Aewol, Jeju.

Kimchi that paired well with the noodles

The kimchi was a fresh geotjeori style with quite a strong jeotgal (salted seafood) aroma.

I happen to like kimchi with that kind of jeotgal scent, and it paired really well with the gogigguksu.

Having a bite of kimchi between spoonfuls of the broth-based noodles cut through the richness and kept refreshing my palate, so I kept reaching for it.

Mandu we switched to on the fly

We had originally planned to order dombe pork, but the mandu at the next table looked so good.

So we ended up suddenly switching our order to mandu.

They looked packed full even from the outside, with a homemade feel, and paired nicely as a side alongside the noodles.

Cutting into the mandu revealed a filling so packed it was even more satisfying than expected.

After already having gogigguksu and dongchimi bibim noodles, adding mandu on top nearly made me burst, but it was worth ordering — we enjoyed every bite.
