Gwangju Chinese restaurant jjukkumi stone jjajang: Mayway
In short
Mayway (메이웨이) is a Chinese restaurant in Gwangsan, Gwangju, known for house-made noodles and jjukkumi stone jjajang. We tried the 32,900-won jjukkumi stone jjajang and the 12,900-won set meal, finishing the leftover sauce as fried rice with green-onion kimchi. Verdict: generous, great-value food, especially the spicy stone jjajang.

Jjukkumi stone jjajang in Gwangju's Cheomdan area
My husband and I had been craving some good Chinese food for the first time in ages, and heard there was a place in Gwangju's Cheomdan area with seriously delicious stone jjajang, so we headed to Mayway with high hopes! After trying it myself, the stone jjajang really was as amazing as everyone said... Totally approved as a Gwangju Cheomdan favorite!

Mayway visitor information
Mayway is at 6 Cheomdangangbyeon-ro 87beon-gil, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, South Korea. It is open daily from 11:00 to 22:00, with a break from 15:00 to 17:00. There is no dedicated parking, so you will need to park on the street, and high chairs are available.

Mayway, a Gwangju Cheomdan favorite, uses noodles made in-house and says it makes its tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour fried pork) using only fresh domestic pork loin. And wait, is the jjajang + jjamppong + tangsuyuk set meal for one really ₩12,900?! Such incredible value...

Plus, tangsuyuk is only ₩1,000 when you order two draft beers...? Whew... If only I could drink beer, I would order that immediately. Next time I will come without the baby and definitely have it, hoho.

Mayway at lunchtime and its self-service bar
Inside Mayway, a Cheomdan favorite. We visited at lunchtime and quite a few tables were occupied. The whole space was clean and comfortable!

At the self-service bar, you could help yourself to danmuji (pickled yellow radish), green-onion kimchi, onions, salad, and extra rice.

What was so unusual at Mayway was this green-onion kimchi! A Chinese restaurant with green-onion kimchi—this place really knows what it is doing. And jjajang with green-onion kimchi? Need I say more?

Before our food arrived, fried sweet potato also came as a complimentary side :)

Ordering jjukkumi stone jjajang and a set meal for one
We ordered the jjukkumi stone jjajang (₩32,900) and the set meal for one (₩12,900).
The jjukkumi stone jjajang first arrived on a tray, then they poured it onto the hot stone plate! It serves two to three, so the portion is quite large.

The presentation was seriously incredible! There was so much sauce and so many noodles that the stone plate was practically overflowing. So generous! The jjajangmyeon was bubbling away on the hot stone plate and looked unbelievably appetizing.

The stone jjajang also had plump, springy jjukkumi (webfoot octopus), and eating it with the noodles made the flavor really come alive. The wonderfully chewy bite was amazing >, <

Spicy stone jjajang with green-onion kimchi
Put it on top of the green-onion kimchi and wow... the kimchi is such a perfect kick! The jjukkumi stone jjajang is mildly spicy to begin with, so I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys spicy food. It was exactly to my taste!

When we had almost finished the jjukkumi stone jjajang, they mixed rice into it, and this was the real deal too. Mix white rice into the remaining saucy goodness, and even when you are full, it somehow keeps going down like magic! I really recommend finishing every last bit, including the fried rice.

A set meal for one with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk
We also tried the set meal for one alongside the stone jjajang! It arrived on such an interesting, pretty plate :) With jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk together, it is the perfect choice when you cannot decide what to eat. Since it is a one-person set, it seems great for dining alone too.

The jjajangmyeon, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk were all good, and it was nice to have when I wanted a different flavor here and there while eating the stone jjajang! And at ₩12,900, the value is unbeatable!

Maybe because it was made with fresh domestic pork loin, the tangsuyuk had none of that off smell and had a deep, rich flavor! Next time, I want to order a large portion.

Ice cream came after the meal too, so it was the perfect finish! Mayway is a Gwangju Cheomdan favorite where you can leave feeling completely satisfied :) Everything was delicious, and the jjukkumi stone jjajang was especially the best. It is a flavor I think I will keep thinking about, and with such good value, I will probably come back!
