Daehangno Saturday lunch wait and window seat for two: Omil Hyehwa

In short

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno is a fusion Western restaurant on the second floor of a building on Daemyeong-gil in Jongno, Seoul. Arriving for Saturday lunch with a friend, the writer found Omil fully seated, walked two laps around the neighborhood, then took a window table for two and ordered the set of rubber-duck omurice and gochujang butter pasta, adding salmon steak gnocchi and corn fritters. The gochujang butter pasta was the best dish of the day, and since the rubber-duck omurice comes with a duck toy to take home, Omil suits both dates and meals out with kids.

I stopped by a Hyehwa restaurant I found after going to see a play in Hyehwa, so here's the post.

It's a totally unique, super cute Western restaurant that'll earn you brownie points if you bring your girlfriend. Kids would love it too — this is my honest review of Omil Hyehwa Daehangno, a special restaurant in Hyehwa.

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno hours and how to reserve

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno is open daily from 11:30 to 21:15. You can reserve through Naver Reservation or just walk in.

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno is a newly opened Hyehwa fusion Western restaurant, well suited to blind dates, family gatherings, or kids. I went for Saturday lunch and, probably because it was the weekend, it was already fully booked..!!

There were a lot of families and couples there. So instead of waiting, my friend and I circled the Hyehwa neighborhood twice.

We finally got a window seat. There were plenty of seats further in too, but I like looking outside, so we sat at the window table for two. You order via the QR code at your table, and there's a review event, so try it if you visit!

What is on the menu and in the set for two?

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno has a range of fusion Western dishes — steaks, pasta, omurice — and the standout menu items are the gochujang butter pasta and the rubber-duck omurice. I'd looked it up beforehand and these seemed to be the most popular items.

Since I went with a friend, we just ordered the set menu, which came with 2 mains, a side, and a drink — great value. We ordered: the set (rubber-duck omurice & gochujang butter pasta), plus salmon steak gnocchi.

Salmon steak gnocchi at Omil

The salmon steak gnocchi we added on top of the set. I really love gnocchi, and since every place does it differently, I try it whenever I visit a Western restaurant like this. The gnocchi at Omil Hyehwa Daehangno looked amazing too. Given it's near a university area, this quality for the price didn't make sense. The salmon steak was quite thick, and there was a generous amount of potato gnocchi underneath.

Rosé sauce gnocchi topped with cheese and herbs

The cheese and finely chopped herbs sprinkled on top — I don't know the name — and, most importantly, the sauce itself was perfect. It was thick and creamy without being too sweet or salty, seasoned just right. It was a rosé sauce that paired beautifully with the potato gnocchi. Honestly one of the best-quality, most thoughtfully made rosé sauces I've had recently. Totally recommend this dish!

Gochujang butter pasta, the best dish of the day

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno, the restaurant that invented K-pasta. This was the dish I was most excited for — a pasta that could otherwise feel greasy, reinterpreted in a Korean way with gochujang (Korean red chili paste) butter sauce. The visual was great too. Loaded with plenty of thick meat, and topped with a round dollop of gochujang butter right on top — amazing.

Wow.. my friend and I were both amazed while eating it. It has a slight sharp kick and a bit of spice, and with the gochujang butter mixed in, it goes so well with the meat, haha. It's exactly the kind of flavor Koreans would love — familiar yet absolutely delicious!

The meat itself tastes like well-cooked pork belly, so eating it together with the pasta was seriously so, so good. Top dish of the day for me. It's clearly the signature dish at this Omil Hyehwa Daehangno location.

Rubber-duck omurice with a duck toy to take home

I was seriously so surprised at how cute it was. Cute quail-egg ducklings huddled together like they're on vacation. The owner really nailed my taste. Even the rubber duck placed next to the bowl was perfect. They said we could keep the rubber duck, and giving that kind of extra touch was really touching.

Honestly, it looked so pretty I didn't expect it to taste good, too? But guess what — it actually tastes good too! The rice inside the omurice (rice omelet) is some kind of ketchup fried rice or something, but either way, it's just delicious, hahaha.

And when you eat the thin egg coating and omurice sauce together with a whole 'duck,' it's pure bliss. It's fun to look at and fun to eat, so this is a must-try dish — it's a special item you can only find at Omil Hyehwa Daehangno!

The rubber duck is seriously so cute..

Corn fritters as the side dish

American-style corn fritters. The corn is coated with salty seasoning and topped generously with Padano cheese, which really evokes America. It's a great simple side dish, and gnawing on the corn cob is fun too, haha.

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno had so many dishes you can only get here, and it was a memorable restaurant that surprised me both with its originality and its flavor.

It's such a cute restaurant that I'd love to come back to once I have a boyfriend, hahaha. Seriously highly recommend it!!
