Daehangno fusion restaurant Oh! Set with wasabi soba maki: Omil Hyehwa

In short

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno is a fusion western restaurant on the second floor of a building on Daemyeong-gil in Jongno, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Hyehwa Station. On a day out to see a play in Daehangno, the writer ordered the Oh! Set for two and ate rubber duck omurice, buckwheat soba maki and spicy seafood oil pasta, with the drinks arriving separately alongside an ice cup. All three plates balanced looks and flavor well, making Omil a place worth returning to for a meal before or after a Daehangno show.

Table setting with rubber duck omurice at Omil Hyehwa Daehangno

I went to Hyehwa to see a play and stopped by the nice-atmosphere Omil Hyehwa Daehangno for rubber duck omurice, buckwheat soba maki, and spicy seafood oil pasta~!

Just looking at the menu when I walked in got my expectations up, and the moment the food arrived, both my eyes and mouth were happy haha

All three dishes had their own charm and a great balance of flavors, so I enjoyed the whole meal in a good mood!

🐤Waddle, waddle! Omil's rubber duck omurice

Rubber duck omurice decorated in a duck shape

The first dish out, rubber duck omurice, had such a clearly drawn cute duck shape that I smiled the moment it arrived!

They're currently running a free rubber duck event when you order the rubber duck omurice, so you can get an adorable tube-riding rubber duck!

The duck's face was cutely decorated on top of the soft-looking yellow egg sheet, so I took several photos before eating.

Thanks to the adorable visuals, I felt happy even before starting the meal haha

When I gently split open the soft egg sheet with a spoon, inside was a hearty, savory fried rice stir-fried with vegetables and meat!

The omurice sauce was sweet and tangy with a subtle, deep flavor, and it went wonderfully with the rice and egg together haha

The fluffy texture of the egg and the savory fried rice blended smoothly, making every bite feel precious haha

It was a dish that made me curious how good the next menu would be!

Buckwheat soba maki (buckwheat gimbap) with wasabi

A plate of buckwheat soba maki rolled with buckwheat noodles

Next up was buckwheat soba maki, an unusual dish rolled tightly with chewy buckwheat noodles instead of regular rice!

Looking at the cross-section, it was densely packed with colorful ingredients like a thick rolled omelet, cucumber, buckwheat noodles, and burdock root!

With no rice inside, it looked lighter and cleaner on the outside, which was charming haha

When I put a piece of maki in my mouth, the distinctive nutty, mild flavor of buckwheat spread gently through my whole mouth haha

The crunchy texture of the vegetables and the soft, sweet rolled omelet with its cute drawn face blended beautifully with the buckwheat noodles instead of feeling out of place!

Adding a bit of the wasabi that came with it brought out the clean flavor even more, so I kept reaching for more without hesitation!

Spicy seafood oil pasta at Omil Hyehwa Daehangno

Last was the spicy seafood oil pasta, which came piled generously with fresh seafood!

Plump shrimp, chewy squid, and a subtle spicy oil aroma really boosted my appetite!

The garlic and pepperoncino were savorily sautéed, adding depth to the oil's flavor haha

The noodles were cooked just right with a springy texture, and the oil sauce clung to them moistly instead of sliding off haha

The refreshing, savory flavor from the seafood blended cleanly with the spicy notes, cutting right through the greasiness typical of oil pasta!

The seafood was fresh with no fishy taste at all, so eating it together with the pasta noodles gave a rich flavor experience!

Verdict after three plates at Omil in Daehangno

All three dishes I tried at Omil this time had a great balance of visuals and flavor, far more satisfying than I expected!

From the cute-looking rubber duck omurice to the clean-tasting buckwheat soba maki and the spicy, addictive seafood oil pasta, it was a really solid lineup haha

Both the food and the atmosphere were great, so I'd love to come back for a good meal the next time I'm in Hyehwa to see a play!
