Window-seat Korean BBQ date in Yeonnam-dong: 1% black beef at Hwaseol

In short

Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom (화설 연남본점) is a charcoal-grill Korean BBQ restaurant on Seongmisan-ro in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, Seoul, serving heukwoo (Korean black cattle), a beef said to make up less than 1% of Korea's hanwoo supply. After booking, the writer arrived right at opening for a window seat and ordered the 1% black beef platter, which came with staff grilling, sauces such as basil pesto, a set doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) and review-event yukhoe (beef tartare). Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom is a Yeonnam-dong date spot worth recommending for an atmospheric beef dinner on a special day.

An overwhelming sight my photos could barely capture. One platter of 1% black beef that made the day special: Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom.

Today I'm sharing my visit to Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom (화설 연남본점), on a day I really wanted to treat myself. Let's start! GO GO~!

First photo of the Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom visit

What kind of place is Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom?

Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Yeonnam-dong serving rare black beef said to be less than 1% of the country's hanwoo (Korean beef) supply. I heard it has been on TV and picked for the Blue Ribbon guide, so my expectations were high before I even went.

Good food matters, but I think a meal stays with you longer when the space and atmosphere come with it. This Yeonnam-dong date spot was special from its upscale mood, and I was happy with everything: the beef quality and the friendly staff. Let me review it in detail haha.

What appealed to me is that you can try this special beef, hard to find and known mostly by those in the know, right in Yeonnam-dong.

Exterior and interior atmosphere

From the wood-styled exterior, Hwaseol feels warm yet upscale. On one side stands a standee showing its TV appearances, which caught my eye. Even just walking past, you sense something special about it, you know?

The interior was even more impressive haha. Marble-style tables, a refined wood-and-black interior and softly spreading orange-red lighting made a calm, upscale mood.

One wall displayed wines that pair well with the meal, and famous paintings and celebrity autographs hung here and there, adding something special. Like a nicely decorated little museum! The tables are spaced generously, so you can focus on your companions without minding the next table. I thought it was a perfect Yeonnam-dong date spot for a mood-filled meal.

Do an opening run for the window seat

I booked ahead and did an opening run (arriving right at opening), so we were the first guests and got a window seat. Through this window, even the Yeonnam-dong alley view looked extra special lol.

Menu and how to order

You order from the menu by QR code. This seems to be getting more common lately. It's tidy with nothing taking up table space, and quick and easy from one phone. But maybe I'm old-school.. I do miss the small fun of flipping through a menu page by page and agonizing over choices haha.

Anyway, opening the menu by QR code, there was quite a range, from beef to Korean pork to many side dishes. I captured it all carefully to share with you haha. We ordered Hwaseol's signature, the 1% black beef platter.

A review event is also running now. Hearing they'd give 1++ hanwoo yukhoe, I joined right away, not-so-secretly lol.

Banchan and sauce lineup

The basic table setting arrives right after ordering: jangajji (pickled vegetables), scallion salad, yangnyeom gejang (seasoned raw crab), seaweed, sweet pumpkin salad, kimchi and sliced onion. The appetizing side dishes were set out one by one. The staff are really delicate: when they put the bowls down, there was no sound at all. And these are heavy ceramic bowls! A tiny thing, but it put me in a good mood.

Each side dish was neatly plated, and all of them make a synergy explosion with the meat haha. The sauce lineup was especially varied: rarely seen basil pesto, subtly herb-scented salt, fresh wasabi and whole-grain mustard, so every bite could be different.

Just the basic setting raised my hopes lol. Beer first, obviously lol. It was a humid, hot day, so the ice-cold beer was so welcome.. it really woke up my appetite before the meat.

How was the doenjang stew that comes with the set?

The unexpected scene-stealer: a first-rate doenjang stew

The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) that comes with Hwaseol's set was another dish that moved me. It was a real treat!! Generously filled with meat, tofu and vegetables, with a deep, rich broth. One spoonful and I went "oh?" at the doenjang stew. The star hadn't even appeared yet and I already knew this place was good lol.

1% black beef platter: look and composition

Charcoal's coming in~!

With the charcoal glowing hot, the real black beef time begins. Alright, let's start the party.

Finally, Hwaseol's 1% black beef platter arrived. Wow.. a sight you can't help but admire the moment you see it!! Even looking again while posting, it's just radiant. From the dense marbling in the bright red meat to the glossy sheen.. you see at a glance why it's called 1% black beef. The accompanying vegetables were king oyster mushroom, sweet pumpkin and shishito peppers, a solid lineup.

Take one more look at the good stuff~ lol. A sight that needed enjoying with the eyes first. I kept taking photos nonstop. My album is nearly plastered with beef lol. But the real thing can't be fully captured.

Does Hwaseol grill the meat for you?

Grilling service

Yes, Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom has a grilling service where the staff grill the meat themselves. They put the meat on the brazier and carefully checked every step of the grilling. What I really liked is they don't rush it, but grill slowly to match the guests' eating pace.

The savory aroma special to hanwoo spreading as it cooked over charcoal, juices rising to the surface, and the beef turning golden with grill marks: just watching made me happy.

Finally, the finished piece. The moment it went into my mouth it melted softly, with rich juices. Savory yet clean, and I truly felt why you should eat good meat.

Great pairings for black beef: basil pesto, seaweed + wasabi

The basil pesto I'd been curious about since it came out. I put a little on and tried it, and the fragrant basil added a different charm. It kept the beef's flavor while adding a subtle aroma, a really good match!

Following the staff's tip, I lightly grilled seaweed on the grill and ate the meat with wasabi on top. Oh~ this combo is quite great too! It matched so well I was surprised lol. Honestly the meat quality is so good that dipping it in herb salt or eating it with scallion salad is just delicious haha. Hanwoo IS everything!!

Various grilled cuts of Hwaseol black beef platter

While I savored it slowly piece by piece, a staff member came by and started grilling again. We still had half the platter left!

The staff grilled everything with care from start to finish, and even explained each cut and the order to eat them, so all I had to do was enjoy. So nice, right? Listening to each cut's explanation and looking closely, even the same beef had different charms in grain, color and marbling.

The last one: galbisal (rib meat)

I slowly enjoyed the final chewy galbisal and cleanly cleared the black beef platter!

Review event yukhoe

The yukhoe I got from the review event came finely sliced with a bright yellow yolk on top, plus radish sprouts, pear, cheese and gamtae (seaweed), a proper plate. Can you see the quality?

After enjoying various cuts of beef from the 1% black beef platter, the savory, soft yukhoe made the meal finish even richer.

Overall verdict on Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom

Sasumnyang's one-line review: Time enjoying a delicious meal with good people in a good space. This is definitely happiness.

From the upscale atmosphere to the exceptional 1% black beef and the delicate grilling service matched to your pace, Hwaseol Yeonnam-bonjeom was a Yeonnam-dong date spot I'd recommend for a special day when you want proper beef. Both the food and the mood left me satisfied. If you're looking for a Yeonnam-dong beef restaurant with great atmosphere, make a special time at Hwaseol. You won't regret it.
