Gyeongju walnut pastry shop where pea cream cheese wins: Buja Hodu

In short

Buja Hodu is a rice-dough walnut pastry (hodu-gwaja) shop on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. On a weekday evening the almond praline was sold out, so three flavors — low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese and matcha — were cut in half for a taste test, and 12 pieces disappeared in minutes. Each pastry holds a whole walnut for real chew, and of the three, pea cream cheese was the clear favorite.

Buja Hodu is a must-hit dessert spot on Hwangnidan-gil for anyone coming back from a Gyeongju trip who wants something nice for their parents! Whenever I go to Gyeongju I always pick up a dessert souvenir, and this time it wasn't just some common snack — it's rice dough + big walnuts + low-sugar red bean paste. Buja Hodu, literally "rich walnut." I'm kind of a walnut pastry fiend, and I finally found a proper, delicious walnut pastry shop in Gyeongju.

What is Buja Hodu? Rice-dough walnut pastries on Hwangnidan-gil

Parking and flavors at Buja Hodu — almond praline sells out fast

Park nearby or use a paid lot! Buja Hodu has four flavors total — low-sugar red bean, pea cream cheese, matcha, and almond praline — but the almond praline sells out fast. I went on a weekday evening and it was already gone... sigh.

How am I supposed to resist this much filling packed into rice dough... All three flavors I tried were delicious, but personally pea cream cheese was my favorite ♥

The box packaging is so pretty too? Genuinely perfect as a Gyeongju souvenir gift set.

Opened in the car: how big the walnut inside really is

Eating them straight in the car. Round, cute little walnut pastries.

차 안에서 꺼낸 동글동글한 호두과자

I've never seen walnut pastries with such a big nut inside before.

Buja Hodu doesn't use plain wheat dough — it's rice dough! So even eating it late at night, my stomach felt totally fine. The rice dough was soft and chewy.

Matcha — a gentle green tea aroma, easy even for beginners

The one I was most excited for — matcha filling! The matcha flavor was more subtle than I expected, a gentle aroma. Fine even if it's your first time trying matcha, or if you're sensitive to it.

Matcha-filled walnut pastry split in half

Isn't the walnut seriously huge here too? Usually you get half a walnut or a tiny piece, but here it's a genuinely whole walnut inside — the crunchy bite is amazing.

Pea cream cheese — the surprise winner of the three

Nutty walnut plus sweet filling — need I say more?? I never knew pea paste and cream cheese would pair this well... Didn't expect much, but pea cream cheese took first place.

Low-sugar red bean — the classic done right

Even the red bean paste is low-sugar!! A flavor that's exactly true to the basics. Being low-sugar meant it wasn't overly sweet, which I loved.

I lost count of how many I picked up... so good... 12 pieces just vanished in no time haha, oops.

Do Buja Hodu boxes work as a Gyeongju souvenir gift set?

Traveling around Gyeongju, this kind of dessert really seemed like a great Gyeongju souvenir gift set. The packaging is neat and there are several flavors to choose from! Great to hand out one each to friends, family, or coworkers.

If you're visiting Gyeongju, this Hwangnidan-gil dessert spot is a must? Make sure to stop by Buja Hodu. Great to eat right away while traveling, or at home with coffee or milk — pairs well with either!

Enjoying Buja Hodu walnut pastries as a snack

I especially love dessert breads and pastries, so for me, Buja Hodu isn't your average walnut pastry — the combination of rice dough + a hefty walnut + three distinct fillings is the best. If you're eating your way through Gyeongju and also looking for a Gyeongju souvenir gift set for the people around you, I recommend Buja Hodu. Out of the three flavors, my vote still goes to pea cream cheese ♥
