Signature photo of charcoal-grilled eel at Yuil Jangeo in Gwangsan, Gwangju

It's that time of year when the temperature swings between morning and evening are just perfect for catching a cold. My body's been feeling kind of droopy and I wanted a solid, nourishing meal. My dad happened to say he wanted eel, so we headed to Yuil Jangeo (유일장어), a spot known as a Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju favorite.

Yuil Jangeo, a Gwangsan-gu favorite, is located at 343 Donggok-ro, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. It's open from 11:00 to 21:00, with last order at 20:30.

Yuil Jangeo's generous parking space

Parking space was pretty generous, so it felt easy to visit as a family.

By the entrance there was a clear guide to how the place works, so even a first-time visit wasn't confusing.

Display area where eels are kept aging

On one side there's a space where the eels are kept aging.

You look at the eels yourself, pick the one you want, and pay. They're divided up by number of diners, so it was easy to choose while thinking about how many people were eating.

Inside Yuil Jangeo: seating and private rooms

Spacious, clean interior of Yuil Jangeo

The interior overall felt spacious and clean. The tables weren't cramped together either, so it was comfortable eating as a family.

There was also a private room on one side, kept nicely tidy — it looked like a good option for family gatherings, work dinners, or group get-togethers.

I peeked inside and it was clean enough that it seemed great for a private meal. On chilly days like these, sitting warmly with family and grilling eel together sounds pretty good.

Yuil Jangeo prices, and can you get takeout or delivery?

Price guide for eel at Yuil Jangeo

What surprised me most at Yuil Jangeo, a Gwangsan-gu favorite, was the price! I figured eel would run a bit pricey no matter what, but it was way more affordable than I expected. What's going on with this value haha.

Yuil Jangeo also does delivery and takeout, apparently. Around gatherings like the upcoming Chuseok holiday, it seemed like a nice gift idea for parents or family members who love eel.

The self-serve bar: side dishes and wrap vegetables

Yuil Jangeo sells domestic freshwater eel, with the table setting fee charged separately. If grilling eel yourself feels tricky, you can just ask the staff and they'll grill it for you — so even people who aren't great at grilling can eat comfortably.

There's also a self-serve bar, so I could grab whatever side dishes I needed with no fuss.

The side dishes came in a good variety, and there were several kinds of wrap vegetables too, so it was easy to mix and match with the eel.

The basic table setting and how the charcoal works

The basic table setting was put together neatly.

Basic table setting and charcoal for grilling eel

They brought out the charcoal for grilling the eel, and it looked like good-quality charcoal, so I figured the eel would cook up nicely. One side of the charcoal was left empty — they explained that once the eel is grilled to a certain point, you move it over to the empty side and finish it off with the residual heat.

Guide on how to grill eel deliciously

There was also a separate guide on how to grill the eel deliciously, so we referred to it while grilling.

And finally — today's star, the eel, makes its appearance! Onto the charcoal it goes, grilling up nicely haha.

Eel turning golden brown over the charcoal

I like my eel a little crispy, so I let it grill a bit longer until it turned golden brown. The charcoal heat was stronger than expected though, so flipping it without burning it was surprisingly tricky lol.

Eel really is best with the perilla leaf (kkaennip) and onion combo. Put a piece of eel on a perilla leaf with some onion, and my hand just kept reaching for more.

To finish: eel tteokgalbi and eel soup

I was curious about the eel tteokgalbi (grilled eel patty skewers), so I ordered one.

Tteokgalbi you grill golden-brown right on the charcoal!! It was more delicious than I expected.

For families visiting with kids who aren't big on grilled eel, ordering the eel tteokgalbi seems like a good move.

Warm eel soup ordered for dessert

We also ordered eel soup, which my dad loves. After the grilled eel, finishing with warm eel soup made everything feel filled up to the core!! It really felt like a proper nourishing meal.

Two people, under 50,000 won: final thoughts on Yuil Jangeo

Coffee area used after the meal

On the way out after the meal, there was a little coffee area set up on one side.

We ate eel generously with my dad like this, and it came out to under ₩50,000, which surprised me. I always thought eel was a pricey dish, but Yuil Jangeo, a Gwangsan-gu favorite, was easy on the wallet while still serving domestic freshwater eel. Most of all, seeing my dad — who loves eel — eating happily made me glad I brought him along. If you're craving grilled eel on a day when the temperature swings have you wanting a nourishing meal, or you want a solid meal with your parents, Yuil Jangeo in Gwangsan, Gwangju is worth a visit.
