It'd been a while since my birthday rolled around, so I took my parents in Gwangju out for some filial-duty treating at Yuil Jangeo (유일장어) ⋆ ˚｡⋆୨୧⋆｡˚ ⋆ My mom and dad already love eel, so they were super satisfied — here's the review for this Gwangju Korean restaurant, fresh off the press.

Wow, this was my first visit, and I wondered if this place was really a Gwangju eel hotspot — turns out yes, because there was quite a wait on a weekend evening. If you hate waiting, book ahead,, though note reservations are only for weekend groups of 20+ or weekday groups of 6+! Still, it was tasty enough to be a Gwangju Korean restaurant worth waiting for.

The Yuil Jangeo dining room was pretty spacious and clean, which I liked. There were also rooms set up as private spaces. Book ahead and you might snag one?!

Choosing your eel at the display case and what it costs

The table-setting fee differs depending on whether you're an adult or an elementary schooler, and eel market prices are written on the wall — though honestly you can't tell much just from that.

I'd just recommend picking by looking at portion size and price at the display case. This was our first time coming as a group of four, so I didn't know how much to order, but the showcase had portions divided by serving size, making it easy to choose!

Haha the lighting in the showcase looks kind of bluish,, there was also a separate fridge for aging the eel next to it!

Side dishes at Yuil Jangeo: eel soup, cold noodles, tteokgalbi

Besides the eel you pick at the case, you can also order side dishes like eel soup, naengmyeon (cold noodles), and tteokgalbi. We picked out so much eel this time that we didn't get around to the tteokgalbi. Next time I'll order a bit less eel and try the eel soup + tteokgalbi combo. And heads up — this place is a nurungji (scorched rice) hotspot, so you have to try it _()_

Honest take on the banchan, self-serve bar and charcoal-finished eel

It's a semi-open kitchen? kind of place, so you trust the hygiene more and can enjoy the eel with peace of mind.

The side dishes were cold cucumber soup, bean sprouts, perilla leaves, wrapping radish, and wrapping vegetables — and if you order rice, other side dishes like seasoned soybeans come out too. Also, Yuil Jangeo is a kimchi hotspot. I'm the type who likes this cool, refreshing kind of kimchi, and it was so good it paired perfectly with the nurungji.

And if any side dish runs low, you can grab as much as you want from the self-serve bar.

Once you pay for your eel and sit down, they soon bring over the charcoal and pre-grilled eel. Eel really does taste way better grilled like this over charcoal than cooked at home ㅜ

A palate cleanser of naengmyeon before the eel arrives! Cool and tangy, exactly the flavor you'd expect — great for resetting your palate.

Ordering 4 servings at Yuil Jangeo and getting 3 full plates

We ordered for 4 people but got 3 whole plates of eel;; the portions were insane. There's actually another plate hidden below in the second photo,, since it comes pre-grilled, you just finish it off a bit more over the charcoal.

The eel was thick and hearty, so even a rough grilling job over the charcoal made it delicious, and grilling it a little crispier still left the inside moist thanks to the thickness — even better that way.

Not fishy at all, and so well prepped that even I, someone who's not that into eel, kept eating without stopping.

Even eaten plain, it's delicious

Dipped in sauce with onion, or wrapped in lettuce, it all works, so just try whatever combo you like. Leftover eel can be packed to go, too.

This is the nurungji I've been mentioning this whole time. After finishing all the eel, you really have to try the nurungji with kimchi as dessert — seriously so good.
