Gongdeok Korean restaurant 120g hanwoo upgrade birthday dinner: Usu
In short
Usu is a Korean fine-dining restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, set on the second basement floor right outside Gongdeok Station Exit 2, where every seat is in a private room. For a husband's birthday, the Dinner B course was booked with the standard 90g hanwoo (Korean beef) upgraded to 120g, running from woo and gyejinjuk porridge through three bite-sized dishes, Jeju red tilefish barley rice, 1++ hanwoo tteokgalbi, five-color abalone gardenia noodles, a personal charcoal grill sirloin spread and corn ice cream. Usu's clean, never-heavy flavors make it work for birthdays and anniversaries as much as for a Seoul sangyeonrye (pre-wedding family meeting) dinner.

I was trying to figure out where to take my husband for his birthday this year, and I really wanted a proper Korean course meal. I heard about a Korean dining spot where you can enjoy hanwoo (Korean beef) in a private room, so I booked right away — and honestly, from the atmosphere to the food, it didn't disappoint at all.

Let me introduce Usu, a Korean dining restaurant located right in front of Gongdeok Station Exit 2 :)
Usu basics: Gongdeok Station Exit 2, 3 hours free parking, corkage-free
- ✔️ Address: 109 Mapo-daero, B2F, Mapo-gu, Seoul
- ✔️ Hours: Daily 11:00–22:00 (open year-round), break time 15:00–17:00
- ✔️ Parking: 3 hours free parking at the Lotte Castle complex
- ✔️ Corkage-free
Being right in front of Gongdeok Station Exit 2 made it super accessible, and with 3 hours of free parking, driving there was no burden at all.
Being corkage-free was another huge plus — we could bring our own wine or champagne to toast with.
Inside Usu: all-private rooms that suit a Seoul sangyeonrye dinner
Walking in, the space felt upscale yet warm at the same time.
Every single seat is set up as a private room, so the layout made it easy to focus on conversation. It immediately struck me as a perfect spot for a Seoul sangyeonrye (family meeting before marriage) dinner.
They also have group seating, which would work well for anniversaries, dol (first birthday) parties, or hwangap (60th birthday) celebrations. With staff serving each course neatly inside the room, it genuinely felt like a hotel dining experience.
Usu's Dinner B course, with hanwoo upgraded from 90g to 120g

We ordered the Dinner B course. The standard setting is 90g of hanwoo per person, but since it was a birthday, we wanted to indulge a bit more, so we upgraded to 120g.

Before long, they showed us the ingredients used for the day's course. Just looking at the marbling on the beef and the freshness of the seafood was enough to make me gasp!

How the Usu course opens: woo and gyejinjuk porridge
The course opened with Woo, Gyejinjuk, a porridge meant to gently settle the stomach.
It's made with a broth of chicken and hanwoo bone stock simmered for a long time, with mushrooms and asparagus added for texture.
Smooth like a rice gruel yet deep in flavor, with the crunch of the garnish on top, it felt like it soothed my whole system.

Three bite-sized dishes: bulgogi sandwich, sweet shrimp gimbugak, scallop and clam
Next came three bite-sized dishes that caught both the eye and the palate.

A bulgogi sandwich, sweet shrimp gimbugak (fried seasoned laver), and scallop with clam were neatly arranged on one plate — bite-sized and not overwhelming, but each combination was genuinely amazing.
The shiitake mushroom shrimp and zucchini that followed were mild and clean, with peanut tofu sauce and chamnamul (wild aster greens) oil that added a nutty, fragrant touch.
Hanwoo yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) with gamtae seaweed
The hanwoo yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) with gamtae (seaweed) packed a big impact in just one bite, with the fresh tartare topped with the salty gamtae.

Wrapped in gamtae and popped in one go, the taste was truly heavenly — no words needed!
Jeju red tilefish with barley rice and chamnamul, served ochazuke-style
Next was a dish with plump Jeju red tilefish placed over barley and chamnamul rice, with neungi mushroom broth poured over it to enjoy like ochazuke.

You cut everything into easy-to-eat pieces and mix it all together — the soft tilefish, savory broth, and chewy barley rice combined into something genuinely delicious.
1++ hanwoo tteokgalbi (grilled beef patty)
The crispy-outside, tender-inside 1++ hanwoo tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) came with white balsamic sauce and basil oil, giving it a rich depth of flavor.

It wasn't overly sweet or salty, so it's a flavor that everyone, young and old, would enjoy.

The standout at Usu: five-color abalone gardenia noodles
Next was personally the most memorable dish — the five-color abalone gardenia noodles. Piled generously with black sesame julienned radish, bracken fern, seasoned chamnamul, perilla leaves, and abalone, the sauce was the real kicker.

The gamtae dressing and mustard garlic sauce were sweet and tangy, and honestly paired so well with each ingredient.

The main course: personal charcoal grill 1++ sirloin and hanwoo seaweed soup spread
If we'd been slowly filling up until now, it was finally time for the main event to properly fill our stomachs — the two-plus sirloin set.

A personal charcoal grill for clean grilling came out alongside a hanwoo seaweed soup spread, and I felt like this was really the highlight of the whole Korean dining experience.
The beef melted in the mouth, and between the neatly arranged side dishes and the seaweed soup, there wasn't a single thing missing.

Dessert at Usu: corn ice cream and jasmine tea
Once the meal wrapped up, the palate-cleansing dessert arrived.
Corn ice cream, cream cheese, crumble and sponge cake, and green tangerine sauce came together in harmony — and I felt secretly proud seeing my husband, who isn't usually into desserts, enjoy it so much.

Jasmine tea, signaling the end of the meal, was served alongside it — even the ice cubes inside were made of jasmine tea itself, which I thought was such a thoughtful touch from Usu!
Why Usu works for birthdays, anniversaries and sangyeonrye alike

Overall, the clean, non-overpowering flavors made my husband's birthday dinner a real success. A Mapo restaurant that holds its own not just as a Seoul sangyeonrye venue, but also for birthdays and anniversaries.

If you're looking for a neat, upscale Korean dining spot, definitely check out Usu :)
