Spicy pork ssambap for two in Danyang: Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap
In short
Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap is a Korean ssambap restaurant on a main road near Gyeonggyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. Two of us ordered the black garlic spicy pork ssambap for two, which came with black garlic rice, a full tray of wrap greens, side dishes and doenjang stew, and the pork carried a gentle garlic aroma that grew with each bite instead of the bitterness black garlic can have. It makes a filling meal to slot in before or after a walk through Gyeonggyeong Market.

Did you know there's a restaurant near Danyang Gyeonggyeong Market that's famous for insane waiting lines?! I'd had my eye on it well before my Danyang trip because I really wanted to try it at least once haha. And that place is~~

Where is Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap?
Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap (단양흑마늘쌈밥)!! Danyang is famous for garlic, right?! And this isn't just plain ssambap (lettuce wrap rice) — it's a place where you can enjoy rice, stir-fried pork, boiled pork and more, all made with Danyang's signature black garlic!! I was curious so I went and checked it out myself haha.
Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap is located near Danyang Gyeonggyeong Market~ It's right on a main road, so we found it without much trouble! Browsing the market and snacking on this and that is nice, but this is a great spot to stop by when you want a proper, filling meal haha.

But even before we stepped inside, it caught our eye big time!!!

Photos from TV features and a bunch of autographs were plastered all over the wall!! I already knew this place was pretty famous, but seeing it in person made me think, "Oh... this must really be a big deal spot?!" — which only made me more excited haha.

Inside the restaurant and how long the wait was
This is the vibe inside Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap!! It was neatly arranged with mostly tables, and when I visited I was able to eat pretty comfortably. Since it's famous for its waits, if you're planning to visit around mealtime, it's a good idea to build in some extra time haha.

The menu: black garlic boiled pork, spicy pork and stir-fried squid ssambap
The menu turned out to be simpler than I expected! Black garlic boiled pork ssambap, black garlic stir-fried pork ssambap, and black garlic squid stir-fry ssambap — all dishes built around black garlic. We debated a bit but both of us love stir-fried pork and were craving something spicy that day, so we ordered the black garlic pork ssambap for two!! After ordering and waiting a bit, the wrap greens and various sauces arrived first~

Ssambap really needs to come with a solid spread of wraps, right?! Haha. Anyway! Lettuce, perilla leaves, napa cabbage — a nice variety of wrap greens, which I loved.
How does the black garlic rice taste?
And here's what I was most curious about!! The black garlic rice. You can see from the photo it's a bit different in color from regular white rice, right?!

Honestly, when I first heard it was rice made with black garlic, I thought, "Wait, is the garlic flavor going to be super strong, or bitter at the end...?" But not at all!! It was way easier to eat than I expected, and the rice itself had this subtle nutty flavor — it was tasty even on its own haha. Even people who usually worry about black garlic's distinct taste could probably handle this one pretty comfortably.

The basic side dishes weren't just one or two — they came out generously~ Kimchi, namul (seasoned vegetable side dishes), mushrooms, and more, all good pairings with the pork, and altogether it felt like a full table spread, perfect for a hearty lunch during a Danyang Gyeonggyeong Market visit.

Black garlic spicy pork: can you really taste the garlic?
And finally, today's main event arrived!! Black garlic stir-fried pork!! Just looking at it made me want to finish a whole bowl of rice, don't you think?! Haha. With the stir-fried pork and doenjang stew (fermented soybean paste stew) together, it really felt like a proper full spread!!

Before eating, I wondered, "Will the stir-fried pork actually taste like black garlic?" And here's the interesting part — it wasn't a sharp garlic hit right at first bite, but rather a gentle garlic aroma that spread the more I chewed! So it definitely had a different charm from regular stir-fried pork haha.

Like this — a bit of black garlic rice on top of the cabbage~ then a piece of pork with vegetables, all wrapped up into one big bite... total rice thief!!

The pork alone is already tasty, but wrapping it up made me keep going and going?! The seasoning on the pork, the crunchy wrap greens, and the black garlic rice together — the combination was really good haha.

A filling meal to add to a Danyang Gyeonggyeong Market day
Taking a warm spoonful of the stew here and there in between — that's a proper Korean meal, isn't it haha. Snacking on things like dakgangjeong (crispy fried chicken bites) or garlic bread around the market is fun too, but this was a great place to stop by when you want a hearty meal in the middle of your trip~

From the black garlic rice to the black garlic pork, it felt different from the usual ssambap I've had, and I had a pretty fun and delicious time here haha. If you're looking for a solid meal before or after exploring Gyeonggyeong Market, this is a great spot to add to your route! If you're searching for good food near Danyang Gyeonggyeong Market, or want to try something a little special in Korean food during your Danyang trip?! Definitely stop by Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap haha.
