I recently went on a family trip to Danyang with my parents. Market snacks are great, but I wanted at least one proper meal during the trip — warm rice, soup, and side dishes and all. So I looked for Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap, which is supposed to be famous near Gyeonggyeong Market (구경시장).
This place uses garlic, a Danyang specialty, from the rice to the main dishes, so it's great when you want something with real local character. Bottom line first: the menu setup made it easy to visit with parents, and having black garlic dishes you can really only try in Danyang stuck with me.

Parking is convenient too — about 5 minutes' walk from the riverbed free parking lot at the Danyang Riverside Special Stage (38 Subyeon-ro), and about 1 minute's walk from Gyeonggyeong Market's public free parking lot. On a family trip, parking matters just as much as taste when choosing a restaurant. We drove, and it was easy to park, eat, and then walk straight into the market — the whole route flowed nicely.
What comes with a ssambap set at Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap?
Looking at the menu board in the restaurant, the signature dishes are pretty simple.
The basic set comes with black garlic rice, a main dish, wrap greens, doenjang dip, assorted side dishes, and doenjang stew all served together.
Since we came as a family, we ordered the black garlic spicy pork ssambap and the black garlic boiled pork ssambap together. Ordering two instead of just one was much better — we could alternate between spicy pork and mild boiled pork. Once the table was set, it was packed full, from wrap greens to side dishes, stew, and rice.
Black garlic spicy pork vs. boiled pork ssambap: how do they taste?
The spicy pork at Danyang Heukmaneul Ssambap comes with a rich, spicy sauce, while the boiled pork is mild and tender — eating both together made for a great combination. Once the table was set, it wasn't just the main dishes; black garlic rice, wrap greens, doenjang dip, assorted side dishes, and doenjang stew all came out too, so it was more filling than I expected.
First, the black garlic spicy pork ssambap has sauce that's soaked in nice and moist. At first I thought the garlic flavor would be strong since it's a black garlic dish, but after tasting it, the garlic aroma was just a subtle note behind the spicy pork sauce — not overwhelming at all.
Piled on top of rice, it completely disappears — total rice thief!
On the other hand, the black garlic boiled pork ssambap was much milder than the spicy pork, which I loved. My favorite combination was wrap greens with black garlic rice + pork/boiled pork + doenjang dip on top.
Lettuce and perilla leaves are good, but wrapping it in crunchy cabbage brought out even more texture, and I kept reaching for more. The boiled pork wasn't dry at all — it was tender, and some pieces came topped with black garlic sauce, adding more savory depth than plain boiled pork alone. The combination of the pork's mildness with the salty garlic and sauce was personally the one that stuck with me the most!
And going back and forth — a bite of pork, then a piece of boiled pork, then another wrap of pork — meant I never got tired of it. Family trips especially have everyone with slightly different tastes. Whoever likes spicy food can focus on the pork, and whoever likes mild food can focus on the boiled pork, which made ordering easy too.
Since doenjang stew and side dishes came along too, it was really satisfying when we wanted a proper meal after a trip full of snacking.
