Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse: a Danyang stay with a 15-month-old

If I had to pick the most satisfying stay from our Danyang trip with my 15-month-old daughter and wife, it would be 'Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse.'

What I really love about this place is the amazing natural surroundings. There's a wide, green field right in front of the guesthouse, and facing it you get a full view of towering mountains, dense forest, and a clear blue sky.

The name sounds like a homey countryside pension, but the meticulous, youthful sensibility of the owner shows through in the clean rooms, making the whole stay a happy one.

Was the 2nd-floor 'Dodamsambong' room big enough for a family of three?

We stayed in the 'Dodamsambong' room on the second floor. The other rooms are also named after famous Danyang landmarks, like Oksunbong.

As soon as we opened the door, I could see it was spacious and comfortable enough for the three of us — me, my wife, and our 15-month-old. I'm really picky about cleanliness when it comes to sleeping — no matter how good the view is, if it's dirty I never go back — but here the floor was spotless, without a speck of dust, which surprised me.

My wife, who's also picky about cleanliness, was very satisfied too. On one side of the room sits a large clay bed.

I was a bit worried about whether I could sleep well on a hard clay bed since I'm used to soft mattresses, but once I lay down, my back felt so comfortable that I slept like a log. If you've ever been curious about clay beds, you'll be very satisfied staying here.

When we laid out the bedding, our daughter seemed thrilled — she wandered back and forth, lay down, got up again, giggled, and played happily by herself. Above the bathroom there was also a neat little loft space, big enough for one adult to lie down and sleep, making great use of the space.

The bathroom was thoughtfully designed — with the sink in the middle, the shower is on the left and the toilet is separated on the right, making it easy to use comfortably.

When traveling with family, someone showering while someone else needs the toilet can create a bottleneck — this layout solves that nicely. It also looked freshly remodeled, spotless with no water stains or mold whatsoever.

Honestly, one reason I liked it so much is that it's fitted with well-known Hanssem products. It seems the owner invested quite a bit in the interior and materials, and the quality looked great. Shampoo and body wash were also generously stocked, so you can pack light. The kitchen was similarly well-equipped with a microwave, electric kettle, rice cooker, hair dryer, and fridge.

Opening the cupboard, you'll find shared kitchenware — plates, dishes, scissors, knives — all neatly arranged, and the wash job was so thorough the utensils practically shone.

Private terrace barbecue and the shared firepit in the yard

Opening the room window reveals a mountain view like a painting. I was worried it might be cloudy on the day we visited, but luckily the sky cleared up beautifully so we got to enjoy the gorgeous mountain view in full.

Best of all, there's a private barbecue right on the terrace. No need to carry heavy meat and gear down to the shared barbecue area on the first floor — just open the door and our family could grill in cozy privacy. The charcoal costs ₩20,000 for up to 4 people, cheaper than at many other pensions.

In the evening, there's also a shared firepit space set up in the yard. If you ask the owner, they'll set it up nicely for you, and once quiet hours start at 10pm, they tidy the fire and everyone settles into a calm, restful atmosphere.

My wife and I didn't get to enjoy the firepit since we had to keep to our baby's bedtime routine of 8pm, but I'd definitely recommend others spend an atmospheric night with the crackling firewood.

By the way, besides the 3–4 person rooms on the first and second floors, there's also a large standalone unit for the whole house. When I visited, I saw an extended family renting the standalone unit and grilling together in the yard — it looked like such a warm, happy scene.

A 2-minute walk to the ankle-deep valley for water play

The decisive reason I chose this pension was the valley access. About a month earlier, our baby had so much fun playing in the water at Gogiri Valley that I deliberately looked for a stay near a valley this time.

There's even a foot-washing spot at the entrance of the pension, which is convenient, and just a 2-minute walk down that path leads to a very wide valley.

Honestly, this puts Gogiri Valley to shame. The valley is divided into easy and advanced zones with different water depths, so you can choose based on difficulty.

The 'easy' zone I took my child into had water that just lapped at my ankles — a perfect depth for a 15-month-old who's just learning to walk to splash around in. We dipped our feet in the clear water, picked up round pebbles and threw them, and there were even freshwater snails and small fish on the bottom, so it felt truly like nature.

For older kids or adults visiting together, the deeper areas would be great for proper swimming.

Why I would book Soseonam Hwangto Village Guesthouse again

The convenience of a hotel or a big resort is nice, but staying at a pension in nature like this, with such clean facilities and a wonderful valley right nearby, makes for a really great memory too. Honestly, the stay and the valley exceeded my expectations so much that next summer, I'd love to bring my parents and my father-in-law along and stay for a longer 2-night, 3-day trip.
