First day of Chuseok holiday! Went for a drive around Namhansanseong with the family haha

Sum in Namhansanseong has great bread, but it's also just a good big café to rest at while driving around 🤍 The weather's been so nice lately that sitting outside with a coffee was perfect. Let me get into the details below!

Where Sum is: the Namhansanseong mountain road drive

The café sits inside Namhansanseong! It's not near the main tourist area but a bit further in along the mountain road, which made the drive there really nice..🌳

The exterior has this modern feel! It's a large space split into a main building and an annex.

The parking area in front is super spacious, so you can comfortably come by car ✨

This is the inside of the main building! The ceilings are high, and the entire front is floor-to-ceiling glass, so you can see the sky and scenery outside. There's also a separate terrace seating area. Just sitting there feels like getting some fresh air..! 🤍

This is the main building, but the annex has a space where you can listen to music! Each space has a slightly different mood..🫶🏻 Since both the indoor and outdoor spaces are so roomy, a lot of people come with kids!

The bakery menu here is really varied. My eyes went wide the moment I walked in.. 😶 Croissants, salt bread, various loaf breads, cakes, briquette bread, financiers — genuinely so many kinds!

Every single bread looked so good..? I had an early dinner reservation, so I agonized and picked just 2 👀

They have everything from trendy new breads to old-school mammoth bread, targeting literally everyone regardless of age or gender..🫡

Injeolmi croissant: sells out fast after 1pm

I'd been craving injeolmi (sweet rice cake) even before we arrived! Doesn't this injeolmi croissant look amazing? Once I saw it, there was no way I wasn't buying it! The sweet soybean powder was so, so good 🫶🏻 The injeolmi was super soft and chewy. The croissant itself was also really delicious..ㅠ🥐

Around 1pm there were still several left, but by the time we were leaving, only one was left! Apparently if you go later in the day, the bread is often sold out already 😭 It was nutty and sweet, with great pastry texture and buttery flavor

Went perfectly with the Americano..🤍

Ham and cheese corn bread, good as a brunch swap

For the other one, I wanted something savory, so I ordered the corn + ham + cheese bread. I really agonized between this and the sausage bread. Both looked delicious 😶‍🌫️ But this one is genuinely delicious! Recommend it

It's like a fluffy pizza bread, and the dough was thicker than typical pizza bread, which made it even better! The corn had good bite and it was packed with filling, so if you come earlier in the day, it works well as a meal, like brunch

The coffee had low acidity too, so it was really tasty! A nutty-leaning bean 🫶🏻

Is Sum worth the drive? Final thoughts

Sum in Namhansanseong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi — great for enjoying a drive along the winding mountain road and then eating delicious bread while looking out at the open forest view through the floor-to-ceiling windows! The space is spacious enough to bring a baby, so I'd recommend it for a weekend date or family outing 🪽
