Marine City lunch parking and seafood jjamppong bap: Bueokgan Chinese

In short

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is a Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Subyeonchoego Pork Gukbap building in Marine City, Haeundae, Busan. The writer ordered poached-egg jajangmyeon, seafood jjamppong bap, and black-vinegar pork tenderloin tangsuyuk, and loved the seafood-packed jjamppong bap's cool, savory broth best. With bubble lamps and European-style furniture, it's a spot that works for both family meals and dates.

Main image of Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch

I was looking for a Haeundae restaurant in Marine City that could deliver on atmosphere too, and I heard so much buzz about Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch that I finally went. Chinese food is usually delicious but sometimes feels a bit heavy to me — this place had a completely different vibe from your typical Chinese restaurant from the moment I walked in.

There's a lunch grace period for street parking from 11:30 to 2:30, so you can park outside. Alright, let's get into it, haha.

Location and entrance of Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch

Entrance of the Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Suybeonchoego Pork Gukbap building

It's in the same building as Subyeonchoego Pork Gukbap, so it wasn't hard to find. There's a dedicated elevator on the 1st floor just for this restaurant, which gave off a fancy feel right from the entrance.

There's a waiting area out front. If there's a wait, you register with Catch Table and wait there.

An interior that doesn't feel like a Chinese restaurant

When we visited, the inside was neatly kept, with an overall upscale but not too stiff atmosphere.

Dining hall tables with comfortable spacing

The tables were spaced comfortably apart and the mood was calm, so it seemed like a good fit for anything from family meals to dates to group gatherings. They actually have private rooms too, which are great for dining with a larger group.

Interior with bubble lamps on the ceiling and European-style furniture

What especially caught my eye were the bubble lamps hanging from the ceiling and the European-style furniture — quite different from what you'd typically picture as Chinese restaurant decor.

Ordering, side dishes, and the photo-review eohyang mandu

You order through the T-order tablet at each table. We ordered poached-egg jajangmyeon, seafood jjamppong bap, and black-vinegar pork tenderloin tangsuyuk this time.

The side dishes were pickled radish and jjasai (pickled mustard stem). The jjasai is really good — I love that texture.

How does the poached-egg jajangmyeon taste?

The dishes we ordered came out quickly.

I started with the poached-egg jajangmyeon, and true to being one of the restaurant's signature dishes, the visual alone was different from a typical jajangmyeon. A soft poached egg sat on top of a rich sauce made with meat and onions stir-fried over high heat — breaking the yolk and mixing it in made the sauce even smoother.

The savory, salty flavor typical of jajangmyeon was still there, but the poached egg toned down the intensity a bit, so the balance of flavors was pretty good. Mixing the sauce evenly through the noodles brought out both the meaty richness and the onion's sweetness, and I ended up finishing the bowl quickly.

The seafood jjamppong bap I liked best

Next up, the dish I liked best at this Haeundae restaurant — the seafood jjamppong bap. It's loaded with mussels, octopus, clams, shrimp, and more, so the broth had a nice cool, refreshing taste. I ordered it with rice instead of noodles, which made it hearty, and mixing the rice into the spicy, rich broth warmed me up from the inside.

Because so many different kinds of seafood were mixed in, every spoonful had something new, which was fun. Pairing it with a heavier dish like jajangmyeon worked well since the flavor profiles were so different — nice to alternate between the two.

Pork tenderloin tangsuyuk with black-vinegar sauce

And of course, the black-vinegar pork tenderloin tangsuyuk. It's crispy-fried tenderloin with a sauce made with black vinegar, giving it a deeper flavor than the usual sweet-and-sour tangsuyuk.

The rich flavor of the sauce came through subtly and paired well with the savory batter, and the meat itself was lean, so it was easy to eat without feeling heavy. Ordering all three together — jajangmyeon, a soup dish, and something fried — made for a well-rounded, satisfying meal.

In summary

This Haeundae restaurant, Bueokgan Chinese, felt like familiar Chinese food dressed up with a more refined atmosphere. The poached-egg jajangmyeon was appealingly savory and smooth, the seafood jjamppong bap had a wonderfully refreshing broth, and the black-vinegar pork tenderloin tangsuyuk stood out for its depth of flavor.

If you're looking for a place to eat with family in Marine City, or looking for a different kind of restaurant for a Busan date, this is worth a visit. If you're like me and care about both atmosphere and food, you'll likely be pretty satisfied.
