Today I want to introduce a real neighborhood gem in Jayang-dong that my husband and I visited over the weekend. These days vegetables cost a fortune, but here you can grab fresh wrap greens ★unlimited★, and grill meat packed with juices in a hot iron lid — that nostalgic taste from way back. It's called Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal (쌈채솥뚜껑삼겹살), located near Guui Station! Let me write up our review of this hearty, thoughtful meal :)

What is it like on a Sunday night? Full house and a wait

We visited Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal on a Sunday evening and it was packed with customers. Nearly every table was full, so unfortunately I couldn't get any interior shots ㅠㅠ (only two tables were left, so we sat down right away!)

Even while we were eating, more customers kept coming in, and a wait started forming. It really felt like a local Korean BBQ favorite that neighborhood folks come back to again and again. The lively, buzzing atmosphere of the restaurant got our appetites going even before the food arrived haha.

We ordered the iron-lid half set for ₩57,000, which comes with pork belly + pork neck + pork jowl + pork skin.

Cleanly set Korean BBQ table

This is the table where we sat. Even though it was crowded and busy, the table and seating area were spotless. You could really tell the restaurant is well managed.

Highlight one: the unlimited wrap-greens self-serve zone

The first thing that impressed us about Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal was that the wrap greens are unlimited!

Wrap greens piled high in the unlimited self-serve zone
Fresh wrap greens self-serve bar including lettuce and perilla leaves

Lettuce and perilla leaves are just the basics — there's a huge pile of varied, fresh wrap greens. With vegetable prices so high these days, being able to grab as much fresh greens as you want without hesitation is such great value, isn't it!?

We piled up as much as we could eat — can you tell how fresh it looks in the photo~?

And here are the basic side dishes — if you run out, you can grab more of these from the self-serve zone too.

We wanted to try a variety of cuts, so we ordered the iron-lid half set. It was great being able to taste pork belly, pork neck, pork jowl, and pork skin all in one go.

Highlight two: staff grill the meat for you

The second thing that impressed us about Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal! The staff professionally grill all the meat for you! (They're really good at it.) They grill it to golden perfection at just the right timing, so all we had to do was chat comfortably while watching the meat cook.

The color of the meat looked amazing too. You could really tell it was quality meat.

Ah, pork belly really does taste best grilled on an iron lid. It came out golden-brown and delicious.

The outside of the meat gets a crispy coating while the inside stays locked in with juicy flavor, so every bite bursts with savory goodness~!

Kimchi and vegetables grilled around the rim of the lid

And along the rim of the iron lid, they pile on kimchi, bean sprouts, bracken, eggplant, zucchini and other vegetables — grilling them there is truly next-level.

I highly recommend the grilled kimchi and bean sprouts soaked in the savory fat dripping from the meat, and the salty bracken too. Hahaha.

We also tried putting a piece of meat on top of the wrap greens with grilled kimchi, bean sprouts, and various sides, then wrapping it all up into one big bite. Adding the crisp, fresh vegetables made it possible to keep eating meat without feeling heavy. (There's no room to get tired of it... ♥)

Finishing the meal with pork skin

We wrapped things up with pork skin — a completely different texture from the meat, which made it fun to eat.

Chewy, sweet and salty at the same time — the perfect note to end the meal on!
