Jayang-dong Korean BBQ weekday dinner, three cuts à la carte: Ssamchae
In short
Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal is a Korean BBQ restaurant in the Jayang Haneul Bercite apartment complex near Guui Station in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. On a weekday evening the writer skipped the set menus and ordered iron-lid pork belly 200g, kkodeulsal 150g (chewy pork cut) and pork jowl 150g à la carte, plus two servings of iron-lid fried rice, with staff cutting and grilling the meat and unlimited refills of wrap greens and side dishes. Between the savoury fried rice mixed with vegetables and the greens table, Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal suits anyone who eats their pork in ssam (leaf wraps).

I'm someone who has to eat meat regularly, that's just me. Today's review is of a new pork belly place I kept passing by.

Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal: a new Korean BBQ spot near Guui Station
Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal is a Korean BBQ restaurant located in the commercial building of the Jayang Haneul Bercite apartment complex. Since it's fairly new I expected it to be quiet, but it was pretty packed on a weekday evening. Has word already spread among the neighborhood that it's good? 🤔

Why order pork belly, kkodeulsal and pork jowl à la carte instead of a set
There were set menus, but since we wanted to try cuts not included in the sets, we ordered:
- Iron-lid pork belly 200g, 1 serving
- Iron-lid kkodeulsal (chewy skirt cut) 150g, 1 serving
- Iron-lid pork jowl 150g, 1 serving
- Iron-lid fried rice, 2 servings
That's what we went with.
The meat we ordered was cut and grilled for us by the staff, and since it had been a while since I'd had iron-lid meat, I was full of anticipation. At Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal you can enjoy the meat cooked two ways — iron-lid or charcoal brazier —

Iron lid or charcoal brazier: which grill to pick
Since the name literally has 'iron-lid' (sotttukkeong) in it, I wanted to try the meat grilled that way, so we picked the iron-lid menu. It turned out to be a modified iron lid where lifting the handle lets you use it as a brazier instead, but even in brazier mode the side griddle stays attached, so

even in brazier mode, you can still grill side dishes like bean sprouts, kimchi, and garlic on it. As the restaurant's name suggests, Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal has a wide variety of wrap greens prepared, which makes it a great choice for vegetable lovers.

Unlimited wrap greens and side dishes, with grilled sweet pumpkin as the top pick
On top of peppers, garlic, perilla leaves and lettuce, there were unusual wrap greens you don't usually see at BBQ restaurants, along with unlimited refills of side dishes like eggplant, enoki mushroom, sweet pumpkin, bracken, kimchi, bean sprouts, mountain garlic leaf, onion, and baek-kimchi (white kimchi). My personal favorite was the sweet pumpkin 🧡 — the sweetness of the grilled pumpkin paired with the meat was delicious.

The pork belly, pork jowl, and kkodeulsal were all mini-sized and easy to eat in one bite. Usually when wrapping meat with greens the wrap ends up too big to eat in one go, but at Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal you can eat it cleanly in one shot.
Iron-lid fried rice with vegetables mixed right in
After the meat, fried rice is a must! We ordered two servings of iron-lid fried rice, and to my surprise, there were vegetables mixed into the fried rice too!! It was like a bibimbap-style fried rice.
Sometimes the fried rice at BBQ places is too bland and I end up adding extra ssamjang (dipping sauce), but at Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal the fried rice was salty enough on its own without needing any extra sauce. Perfect for someone like me who loves salty food!! Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal Jayang branch is run by a livestock specialty company, so it seems like a good spot to visit whenever you're craving pork belly.

What was good about Ssamchae Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal
🐷Jayang-dong Korean BBQ with semi-outdoor seating
In this appetite-inducing season, if you're looking for a spot in Jayang-dong or Guui-dong with outdoor-style seating, this is it. The seats by the window have doors that fully open, giving that semi-outdoor feel.
🐷Guui Station Korean BBQ with a wide spread of fresh wrap greens
As mentioned above, they stock wrap greens rarely found at typical BBQ restaurants, which made it fun to wrap with different types.
🐷Guui-dong Korean BBQ where staff grill the meat for you
Grilling meat isn't a big deal, but given the choice I always prefer a place that does it for me — especially when I have zero energy after work. It didn't look like a staff-grills-for-you kind of place from the outside, but the staff grilled the meat for us, which made the meal effortless.
🐷Jayang-dong Korean BBQ with free corkage
Any alcohol is allowed except drinks sold in-store, with no limit on the number of bottles — free corkage. Sounds great for year-end family gatherings and other get-togethers.
