If you love tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cakes), you can't not know this famous Yongsan spot — I finally made it to Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch.

It started as a small street cart back in 2004 and has since settled into a proper restaurant, so I went in with high expectations.

What is the restaurant like inside?

The moment I walked into Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, the high ceilings and spotless interior caught my eye. Most tteokbokki places tend to be cramped or a bit cluttered, but this main branch was spacious and never felt stuffy — genuinely comfortable for a meal.

You can also put your name on the waitlist through CatchTable, which should be handy on weekends or during busy hours.

Even while clearly busy, the staff were so friendly that I felt good the whole time, from walking in to finishing my meal.

The restrooms are properly separated by gender, and amenities like baby chairs and free Wi-Fi are all in place, so it also works well as a spot for group dinners or hangouts with friends.

What I ordered that day was the Hyeonseoni Kkobuli Set, great for trying a bit of everything. It comes with tteokbokki + mixed fried snacks + mini gimbap + sundae (Korean blood sausage) + 3 curly fish cake skewers — a very solid package covering all the bunsik classics. I went with the spicy option for the heat level.

Tteokbokki (spicy): the moment I took a bite, I blurted out, "Whoa, way spicier than I expected!" It felt about as intense as the basic spice level at Yeoptteok. But it wasn't just heat — it was sweet, addictive, and clung to my mouth so well that even sweating buckets, I couldn't stop reaching for more.

Mixed fried snacks & sundae: the crispy fried snacks and the chewy, odor-free sundae paired perfectly when dipped into the spicy tteokbokki sauce.

Curly fish cake: the 3 curly fish cake skewers gently soothed my mouth from the fiery heat, giving me a proper way to pace myself. The broth was deep and refreshing too — I kept sipping it.

Self-serve mayonnaise sauce and tteokbokki with beer

The self-serve station tucked into one side of Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch was incredibly useful! Besides pickled radish and soy sauce for the fried snacks, there was a separate mayonnaise sauce meant for dipping the mini gimbap.

Dipping the mini gimbap or spicy tteokbokki lightly into the savory mayo softened the heat while making the flavor explode with richness. If you visit Hyeonseonine, definitely try this mayo sauce.

They also sell a range of drinks like beer and soju, making it a great Yongsan tteokbokki spot for enjoying 'tteokmaek' — spicy tteokbokki with a cold beer on the side.
