Dongtan jjamppong restaurant, fried dumplings and zero cola: Bultina

In short

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a Chinese restaurant in the Namgwangjang area of Dongtan, Hwaseong, known for cockle jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup). On a morning after drinking, the order was cockle jjamppong with fried dumplings and a bowl of rice, with the leftover rice stirred into the remaining broth to finish as jjamppong rice. The smoky, fiery broth and a zero-sugar cola made Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong both a hangover cure and a filling meal.

The weather's suddenly turned chilly and fall feels like it's on its way. On cold days like this I crave something spicy, and when Dongtan calls for a fiery bowl of soup, this is the answer — Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong, a place with real credentials for jjamppong. The dish that always comes to mind on cold days like this: jjamppong!!

I want to tell the story of how a visit to Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch turned into a proper hangover cure~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!!!!

Why Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong the morning after drinking?

I'd had a night out drinking the day before, so I was desperate for something spicy and refreshing. I happened to find out there was a place nearby famous for cockle jjamppong, so I headed straight there.

The smoky, wok-fired aroma hit me the moment I walked in, already raising my expectations. Looking over the menu, I ended up ordering cockle jjamppong along with fried dumplings and a bowl of rice.

For a proper hangover cure, one soup dish alone often isn't quite enough, so I decided to order generously and enjoy a variety.

Cockle jjamppong at Bultina: smoky wok flavor plus cockle broth

The cockle jjamppong that arrived first stood out from the visuals alone. Plump cockles piled generously over a bright red broth — just looking at it already felt like it would clear my head.

Taking a spoonful of the broth, the first taste hit with fierce spiciness along with a distinct smoky wok flavor.

It wasn't just spicy — there was a deep flavor like it had been stir-fried hard over fire, intense yet packed with savory depth.

I couldn't help but think there's no better broth for soothing a stomach after heavy drinking the night before. The cockles were substantial in size and packed with meat, so cracking them open one by one was its own small pleasure.

Adding the cockles' refreshing, savory broth to the jjamppong soup gave it a depth clearly different from regular jjamppong. The noodles were also chewy and well-cooked, pairing nicely with the broth.

Alternating between a spicy spoonful of broth and a bite of noodles, before I knew it beads of sweat had formed on my forehead — and somehow that felt incredibly refreshing.

Fried dumplings and jjamppong rice: from hangover cure to full meal

The fried dumplings I ordered alongside exceeded expectations too. Crispy on the outside and packed with juicy filling inside, they were perfect to alternate with bites of the jjamppong broth.

After the spicy broth, the savory dumplings cleared the palate, making it a combination I could keep eating without getting tired of it.

Then, once the jjamppong was mostly gone, I mixed the remaining broth with the bowl of rice to finish it off as jjamppong-bap (rice mixed in leftover broth) — and this part was genuinely a stroke of genius.

The savory cockle flavor and spicy broth soaked into every grain of rice, letting me enjoy it fully right down to the last bite.

I went to cure a hangover but ended up feeling like I'd had a really solid, satisfying meal instead.

The spicy broth made me thirsty, so I paired it with zero-sugar cola — added a refreshing lift with no calorie guilt, a perfect match for enjoying the spice.
