Yongsan tteokbokki after the IPARK Mall Chiikawa store: Hyeonseonine

In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is an instant tteokbokki (spicy rice cake stew) restaurant near Sinyongsan Station and Yongridan-gil in Yongsan, Seoul. On the way back from the Chiikawa store at IPARK Mall with a 9-year-old, the writer ordered mild instant tteokbokki for two plus ramen noodles and gimmari (fried seaweed rolls); the base set of tteokbokki, jjolmyeon noodles, egg, fish cake, vegetables, fried mandu, fried rice and fish cake broth was so generous that the extra noodles felt unnecessary. Hyeonseonine finished as a 100% will-return K-bunsik spread, fried rice and all.

Exterior of Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

I paid a visit to Hyeonseonine, a well-known spot for tteokbokki in Yongsan / near Yongridan-gil. Hyeonseonine is a brand famous for instant tteokbokki, currently running 7-8 directly-operated branches across Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Busan. My daughter loves Chiikawa, so on a weekend we visited the Chiikawa store at IPARK Mall's 'Dopamine Station,' and while looking for somewhere to eat afterward, this place came to mind. It's somewhere I've often visited before, but this time I came as part of a sponsored review campaign through Superchart.

Where is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, and how close is it to Yongsan and Sinyongsan Stations?

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch sits very close to Yongsan Station (Line 1 / Gyeongui-Jungang Line) and Sinyongsan Station (Line 4), and it's also near the hip Yongridan-gil area, making it easy to reach from pretty much anywhere in Seoul. As I mentioned, it's convenient to stop by after visiting Yongsan IPARK Mall, the Yongsan Electronics Market (which has been getting more family-friendly lately), or Yongridan-gil, and since it's also close to office districts like Amorepacific's headquarters, I'd expect plenty of office workers dropping in on weekday lunches too.

Inside Hyeonseonine: check-in kiosk, self-serve bar and aprons

Here's the overall layout of the restaurant. Right by the entrance there's a kiosk for registering your waiting number, and facing it is a kiosk for ordering food along with the self-serve bar; tables for dining sit in the center, with the kitchen across the way. Since it's an instant tteokbokki specialist, every table comes with a built-in burner.

Hyeonseonine instant tteokbokki menu

Mild for a 9-year-old: which of Hyeonseonine's 3 spice levels to pick

On Hyeonseonine's menu, tteokbokki can be ordered either as instant (cooked at your table) or already prepared. Instant is the house specialty, but the ready-made version can also be ordered in half portions, so it might be worth trying both. We ordered instant tteokbokki for two plus extra ramen noodles and gimmari. For instant tteokbokki you choose a spice level — mild (fine even for young kids), medium (a bit spicier than ramen, the most popular choice), or Hyeonseonine's signature hot. Since I was eating with my 9-year-old, I went with mild. (Even that turned out a bit spicy for her — next time it might be worth asking if they can scoop off some of the sauce or make it even milder.)

Instant tteokbokki for two set up before cooking

What comes in instant tteokbokki for two — and did the ramen add-on make sense?

Instant tteokbokki for two, ready right after ordering. Aside from the ramen noodles and gimmari, everything else came standard: tteokbokki, jjolmyeon noodles, egg, fish cake, vegetables, fried mandu, fried rice, and fish cake broth. We'd ordered extra ramen noodles separately, but the base set alone was so generous the add-on almost felt unnecessary.

Each table had a sign worth reading before eating, explaining the boiling stages and cautions for instant tteokbokki, plus info on a review event, so it's worth checking in advance.

How long does it take to boil, and how does it taste?

The tabletop burner at Hyeonseonine seems powerful, because it started boiling in under 5 minutes; at that point we added the ramen noodles and let it simmer about 3 more minutes.

Here's a shot of everything bubbling away nicely before we dug in. The chewy wheat rice cakes, fish cake, vegetables, and jjolmyeon noodles came together really well — and as I mentioned, even factoring in eating with a kid, the portion was so generous we didn't really need the extra ramen noodles. We ate it up happily.

And of course, we couldn't skip the grand finale — the fried rice.

Who is Hyeonseonine best for — families, couples and visitors from abroad

We'd actually grabbed our Chiikawa store waiting number and rushed over, so we didn't get to fully relax and enjoy the meal, which was a bit of a shame — but it's a great spot to visit calmly with family, a partner, or friends. At the table next to us, someone was dining with a foreign friend, which made me think Hyeonseonine is exactly the kind of place to properly introduce the taste of K-bunsik (Korean casual snack food). Plus, judging by the steady stream of delivery orders through Baemin and Coupang Eats, it's clearly a place that's well loved by locals too.

This was a review of Hyeonseonine, a place I visit often and would return to with 100% certainty.
