Times like this call for a hearty stamina dish, so today I'm writing about a visit to Daedo Jangeo, an eel restaurant in Palyong-dong, Changwon, where I went for the first time in ages and came back deeply impressed.

Back at an old regular spot after several years

My parents-in-law love eel, so whenever the whole family ate out, we came to Daedo Jangeo all the time, paying with our own money. But their health got worse and we couldn't visit for a long while, so this place always stayed in a corner of my heart as a bit of a regret.

Then a good opportunity came up not long ago, and I finally got to visit Daedo Jangeo again after so long.

How clean is Daedo Jangeo?

The first thing that surprised me the moment I walked in wasn't the taste, it was the cleanliness. Nothing had changed from my visit a few years ago; the place was kept absolutely perfectly. Not a speck of dust anywhere, every corner so clean that I couldn't help marveling.

I happened to come in the quiet hours well after lunch, and I saw the owner taking down every single fan and carefully wiping them one by one before bringing them back in. Watching that, I nodded to myself: this kind of tidiness doesn't just happen on its own.

Even the water bottle on the table had no grime at all, just neat and clean. And the utensil box? Practically a sterile room 👍🏻 Before I'd even tasted the food, the restaurant's amazing hygiene had already touched me deeply.

Seasoned sea eel (medium) for ₩50,000: how does it taste?

What I ordered was Daedo Jangeo's seasoned grilled sea eel (medium) for ₩50,000.

Side dish spread at Daedo Jangeo

I sat down in a warm mood and ordered, and soon neat side dishes began filling the table. A colorful, clean spread that goes perfectly with grilled eel, and among them the fragrant banga pancake (a savory pancake made with banga, Korean mint) was a real appetite-opener, the star of the sides.

Then finally the main dish of the day arrived: seasoned grilled eel for two. Daedo Jangeo serves its seasoned eel on a heated grill plate, so you can enjoy it warm from the first bite to the very last. That's a big plus.

With all that bright red sauce piled on, you might worry it'll be too spicy or harsh, but when you actually eat it, it's not harsh at all, with a deep savory flavor that clings to your mouth. If you don't usually like a lot of sauce, I think you could scrape a bit off before eating and still enjoy it plenty.

Above all, the eel itself was so fresh that there wasn't even 1% fishy smell. Personally I don't like eel that smells fishy or has lots of tiny bones that catch in your mouth, but the eel at Daedo Jangeo in Palyong-dong had no bones to chew on, just soft, plump meat, so it was really easy to eat.

I put a golden, juicy piece of eel on a fresh perilla leaf, added crunchy onion and sweet-and-sour pickled ginger, and wrapped it all up. The harmony was so good I couldn't put my chopsticks down. I also wrapped it in lettuce and tried it with the different kinds of kimchi that come with it. I totally inhaled the whole thing.

How much is the eel soup to finish the meal?

At Daedo Jangeo, after your eel you can order eel soup for just ₩3,000 (₩4,000 for the eel soup and rice set). As I was happily finishing the grilled eel, I ordered eel soup and rice as my meal, and for this quality at this price, it felt like they were practically giving it away.^^

As soon as the soup came out, I sprinkled in the jepi powder (ground Korean pepper, a numbing, citrusy spice) provided on the table and took a big spoonful. The deep, clean broth, tasting like it had simmered for hours, spread through my whole body, and the hot, rich soup tidied up my mouth for a perfect finish. Today's lunch was a total success from start to finish.
