Spicy pork feet skillet and kimchi noodles at Juyukjeom, Daegu

Do you all know jokgui (grilled pork feet)?? One day it showed up on my Instagram feed and then completely took over for a while — I was dying to try it!!!

Then I heard there was a spot doing jokgui in Daegu too, and I ran straight over! 🏃‍♀️💨 So, was it as good as I'd been imagining all this time? Here's my review from Juyukjeom in Daegu, straight from the source haha.

The interior and outdoor tables

Juyukjeom is set a little way inside an alley, but it's definitely not hard to find! There's a Juyukjeom banner right at the mouth of the alley, so you can just follow it to find the place easily haha. First-timers shouldn't worry about getting lost!

The weather's gotten a lot cooler these days haha. Juyukjeom has about 3–4 outdoor tables set up, so on nice days you can enjoy that outdoor dining vibe! Grilling meat and having a drink outside in cool weather sounded like the perfect atmosphere 🍻

The inside is decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay, which gave it a strangely cozy, familiar feel haha. It felt a bit like visiting grandma's house, which gave it a different charm from the more trendy-feeling grill restaurants these days!

The self-serve bar was also kept nice and clean, which I liked!!!

Menu and ordering

We ordered one spicy red pork feet skillet, the one I was so curious about, plus one kimchi-rolled noodles haha. Finally, the jokgui I'd wanted to try for so long! I was so curious whether it would taste like what I'd seen so much of on Instagram lol.

Basic side dishes and chicken porridge

This is the basic setup they bring out first! The rest of the side dishes you just help yourself to from the self-serve bar as much as you like haha. And the chicken porridge(?) that comes as a default was genuinely delicious ㅠㅠ Nicely salty seasoning, exactly right, so I kept reaching for it lol. That alone felt like it could easily go with a whole bottle of soju 🍻

How was the spicy red pork feet skillet?

The jokgui finally arrived!! When it first came out, the color was darker than I expected. I thought, 'Wait, I ordered the red one, did they bring the wrong thing?' But soy sauce jokgui would've been fine too, so I just took a bite and… wait, it's spicy lol. I assumed from the color that it'd taste like soy sauce, but nope, not at all. Turns out the right dish had come out after all lol. Lesson learned: never judge food by color alone 😆

The chewy fat and tender meat came together really well. It had a totally different feel from jokbal, and made for a nice change of pace! Just note that the red sauce is fairly spicy, so if you can't handle heat well, keep that in mind.

Highly recommend the kimchi-rolled noodles as a side

If you go to Juyukjeom, you have to order the kimchi-rolled noodles!! The toppings are generous, and when things get too spicy from the meat, a bite of this cools it right down. Tangy, sweet, and refreshing, it went really well with the meat too. Seriously highly recommend it as a side dish!!

Overall thoughts

I went to Juyukjeom, a Dongseongno-area grill restaurant in Daegu known for its chewy jokgui!! I liked that everything was served on a hot plate over a gas burner so it stayed warm from start to finish haha. Meat's always better hot 🤣🤣

And I really, truly recommend the chicken porridge that comes as a default side and the kimchi-rolled noodles we ordered. The weather's nice these days too, so enjoying the outdoor tables wouldn't be a bad idea at all 🩷
