Root straightening and layered cut at Cheongdam salon Beorn Hair

Winter's here so I wanted to switch up my hair a bit, and it had been a while since I got root magic straightening and a layered cut together! This time I visited Beorn Hair Cheongdam near Gangnam-gu Office Station, and designer Yumin took care of me.

Normally when the curl comes up at my roots, my whole hairstyle falls apart no matter how much I blow-dry it. This time, along with tackling the root curl with magic straightening, I also brought my fringe back and got an all-over layered cut. Overall my hair ended up so much neater and the whole vibe shifted a bit — I was really happy with it.

Beorn Hair Cheongdam location, hours and parking

Beorn Hair Cheongdam is at 710 Seolleung-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the 2nd floor of the Cheongyul Building. It's open daily from 09:30 to 20:00, closed every Tuesday as its regular day off. Just note individual designers may have different days off, so it's worth checking when you book!

Parking is available too! If you're driving, you can use the valet service — hand your car over at the valet booth across the street, and the valet fee is ₩4,000. It's also pet-friendly, so that's good to know if you need to bring your dog along.

What is Beorn Hair Cheongdam like?

Beorn Hair Cheongdam is a Cheongdam hair salon sitting right on the main road near Gangnam-gu Office Station, so it's pretty easy to get to.

It's only about 121m from Exit 3-1 of Gangnam-gu Office Station, so genuinely close to the station!

If you're coming from Exit 4, turn around and walk straight toward Woori Bank and Paul Bassett, then turn right — it's on the 2nd floor of the Cheongyul Building.

The salon's designers all have 10+ years of experience, and they offer design cuts tailored to your face shape and head shape, plus a range of perms, clinic treatments, and scalp care.

Why I booked a consultation with designer Yumin

Designer Yumin specializes in men's cuts, see-through shadow perms, down perms, and layered cuts. She told me the thing she cares about most is a style that actually suits you. Instead of just recreating whatever's trending, she does a 1:1 consultation looking at your face shape, head shape, and hair condition to figure out what design will genuinely work.

She checked my curl level and hair shape really thoroughly, which made me trust her even before the treatment started!

My curl is pretty severe, so over time the root curl would come up hard and make my whole head look frizzy — that always bugged me. This time we decided to tame the roots and also refine the overall silhouette together.

Root magic straightening usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, so before starting they moved me to a comfortable seat. I could freely use a charger, and they gave me a drink and a light snack to enjoy during the treatment!

How the root straightening perm works, step by step

Root magic starts with applying the solution to the hair and using heat to help it soak in.

I heard that even though it's a root treatment, applying it too close to the scalp can affect the scalp, so it's important to apply it carefully close to but not touching the roots. Yumin applied it so meticulously that I really appreciated it.

Once the solution treatment is done, they give it a quick rinse in the shampoo room.

From this point the stylists work together to smooth out my hair section by section. I've had straightening done at several other salons before, and how carefully they do this step really determines how long the straightening lasts.

After all that flat-ironing, can you see how noticeably calmer my hair looks! Once all the frizzy curl was smoothed down, they applied the neutralizer and then it was back to the shampoo room.

Directional correction for the fringe

Since the perm solution and flat iron inevitably affect the hair, they applied heat protection and dried my hair. And this visit's biggest change was actually the fringe.

Since it's winter now, I figured I'd bring my fringe back down, so I told Yumin, and while doing the straightening she fixed the fringe forward and straightened it too! For people who've had a middle part for years, cutting a blunt fringe usually means it keeps splitting apart — but Yumin carefully did the fringe correction and set the fringe length while considering my face shape and overall hair length! Bringing my fringe back really changed the whole feel.

Adding layers: the layered cut

Just cutting the fringe and stopping there would have left the overall hair shape looking a bit heavy, so this time I also got an all-over layered cut. A layered cut can look really different depending on how much layering goes in! Too much and the hair looks thin and hard to style; too little and you lose that signature light feel of a layered cut, so the consultation really matters.

For me, the roots were calmed with the straightening and the ends were naturally layered, striking a balance that wasn't too heavy or too light. Especially with layers falling naturally around my face, it looked way more natural than hair just dropping in one straight line. After the layered cut, my hair got some movement, and even when I blow-dry it, the silhouette holds nicely!

Root straightening plus a layered cut: was it worth it?

With the roots neatly straightened and layers added throughout, my hair ended up calm but not too heavy. And bringing the fringe back definitely changed the vibe around my face too, haha. Personally, compared to just getting the root straightening alone, having the cut done together made the finished look feel way more complete.

I'm not usually someone who puts a ton of effort into styling my hair day-to-day, so having something I can manage easily at home matters to me — and I loved that Yumin factored that in when shaping the style.

I originally went in just planning to get the root straightening, but after the consultation I ended up bringing my fringe back and adding a layered cut too, and the whole feel of my hair changed quite a bit. Especially with the root curl calmed down and natural layers through the ends, my hair doesn't look flat or heavy — it just falls cleanly.

It's been a while since I've had a fringe, so it feels a little new to me too, haha.
