Takeout mixed sashimi for a hotel room with a baby: Hoega, Sokcho

In short

Hoega is a sashimi restaurant in Sokcho run by a couple with 30 years of experience, known for letting you take a mixed sashimi platter and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) to go in one order. Traveling with a baby, the writer called an hour ahead to reserve a small mixed platter and mulhoe, picked it up, and ate it at the hotel — thick slices with fins still on, plus white kimchi and washed, pre-portioned lettuce wraps, made for a full spread even without a kitchen. Recommended for anyone in Sokcho or Yangyang wondering where to get sashimi to go.

Last summer, on a family trip to Sokcho. My husband insisted there was a sashimi restaurant he absolutely had to eat from, and dragged us over 2km in the summer heat to pick it up — and that place was here. Hoega, the Sokcho branch!

Have a young kid and still want sashimi? = you need to find a good takeout sashimi spot. How do you find a good takeout sashimi spot? = somewhere you've been, or somewhere recommended. So now, all of you can just come here 😉 Because I highly recommend it (who do I think I am, haha)

The owner couple has a whopping 30 years of experience, so they skip the unnecessary sokkidasi (small side dishes, lol) and win you over with thick, delicious sashimi plus a few simple side dishes and wrap greens — a genuinely great restaurant 🐟

Seating inside Hoega

We went with takeout since we were traveling with a baby

Just eyeballing it, the space could easily seat 3-4 parties, and locals inside were eating heartily with drinks. Honestly, the real way to enjoy sashimi is at the restaurant with a drink, plus spicy fish stew and clear fish soup after — but when you're traveling with a baby, getting sashimi to go from a good place is the best option!

Takeout sashimi orders lined up for pickup

I'd called ahead to reserve (an hour before pickup), and when I arrived, I saw the takeout packages all sorted with time and phone number written on each one individually — I was a little... moved 🥹

While I was waiting for pickup, customers kept streaming in nonstop, and delivery and takeout order calls just kept coming — I was thinking 'hmm, if they start packing now it'll probably take about 10 minutes,' but every customer who arrived had their order already packed and ready to hand over immediately! Being this busy and still delivering flawless service like this... that's the energy of success 🔥

Unboxing sashimi at the hotel: small mixed platter + mulhoe

As soon as we got back to the hotel with the takeout, we unboxed the sashimi right away.

Checkpoints for a mulhoe lover

I like mulhoe, so I have somewhat specific standards — is the abalone fresh (I love that ocean scent with a bit of crunch), does the cabbage avoid bitterness and stay crisp, is there still plenty of sashimi left by the time you add the noodles at the end, and is the mulhoe broth not overly sweet or artificial-tasting. Anyway, just try it first. It's seriously delicious. Listen to your unnie. 👵🏻

White-fleshed sashimi has to be eaten with white kimchi, that's just the rule. The owners really know their stuff.

The mulhoe broth was still slightly icy, which was perfect for eating at the hotel! And when I was ordering, it looked like they also take extra orders for noodles and broth.

The mulhoe was seriously delicious. A recommended menu item! 👍🏻

What we appreciated in a hotel with no kitchen

They also packed plenty of wrap greens, washed and pre-portioned them cleanly 🥹 That kind of thoughtfulness would make sense for an Airbnb, but at a hotel with no kitchen, it was a total lifesaver!

I'm drooling just writing this now..🤤 The mulhoe sauce was tasty enough to just spoon over plain sashimi, so we went all out — kimchi on the bottom, sashimi on top, mulhoe over that.

Where to get sashimi in Sokcho and Yangyang

I always agonize over what to eat when planning a Gangwon-do trip, and even then we always end up unable to try everything — but sashimi is still a must, because it just doesn't feel like a beach trip without it! That said, figuring out where to get sashimi during the trip is its own task, so I've tried the fish market, and also taken the baby to sit-down sashimi restaurants, but either way, finding one great takeout sashimi spot and just relaxing with it is a huge pleasure too, I think.

Wondering where to eat sashimi during your Sokcho or Yangyang trip? I recommend Hoega. Just try it, seriously.
