Seoul galbitang restaurant with free misugaru refills: Hoegi Wang

In short

Hoegi Wang Galbitang is a galbitang (beef short rib soup) restaurant on Imun-ro near Hoegi Station and Kyung Hee University in Dongdaemun, Seoul. Visiting with her boyfriend during the weekend dinner rush, the writer ordered the meat-packed aronsatae galbitang (19,000 won) and the spicy galbitang (17,000 won), with unlimited rice refills plus a free self-serve corner of 17-grain misugaru and barley gangjeong. The barley gangjeong was good enough that she paid for two bags to take home, closing out a filling, well-priced dinner.

Trying to figure out what to eat with my boyfriend this weekend, I suddenly craved a hot, rich meat broth to pour over rice — so off we went to Hoegi Wang Galbitang!

Where is Hoegi Wang Galbitang, and what are its hours?

Hoegi Wang Galbitang is at 54 Imun-ro, 1st floor, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, near Hoegi Station and Kyung Hee University. It's open daily from 10:30 to 21:00, with last order at 20:20.

I've genuinely been drained from work lately, so I urgently needed to restore some energy lol. I was hunting for a proper, hearty restaurant near Hoegi Station and found this place — and cutting straight to it, the meat was way more generous than expected and the broth was so deep that we both ate marveling the whole time 🤤 If you're serious about galbitang, this is one to bookmark. Let's get into the review!

Inside Hoegi Wang Galbitang: is the solo seating good for eating alone?

Hoegi Wang Galbitang's dining room is bigger and cleaner than expected, with a row of solo seats along the window making it easy to eat alone. Every table also has a phone stand, which is a nice touch.

The moment we walked in, we were surprised how spacious and clean the place was! We went during weekend dinner peak hours, and it was buzzing — some people enjoying a meal with drinks, others clearly there to eat alone. I especially loved the row of solo seats by the window, and when we noticed the phone stand on every table, my boyfriend and I were like, wow, the owner's sense for this is next level lol. Such a thoughtful touch for solo diners stopping by after work 👍

House-made seokbakji (radish kimchi) and the self-serve corner

Hoegi Wang Galbitang's self-serve corner has unlimited rice refills as a baseline, plus free unlimited 17-grain misugaru (grain drink) and barley gangjeong (candied barley snack). The basic side dishes are house-made seokbakji (radish kimchi), onion, chili peppers, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste).

As soon as we sat down, they quickly set out seokbakji, onion, chili peppers, and ssamjang! I heard the seokbakji is made in-house. No wonder — one bite in, it had this crisp, refreshing savory kick that had my hand reaching for more even before the galbitang arrived lol.

And then we went to check out the self-serve corner and were seriously surprised...🤍

This is genuinely the first galbitang place I've seen give out dessert-level snacks like this too — we were both thrilled lol.

17-grain misugaru poured into a cup

The misugaru wasn't watery at all — super nutty and rich, so I gulped down two cups, one before and one after the meal, hehe.

What the couple ordered at Hoegi Wang Galbitang, and the prices

We ordered two bowls: the meat-packed aronsatae galbitang for ₩19,000 and the spicy galbitang for ₩17,000. We wanted lots of meat so we got one aronsatae galbitang, plus one spicy galbitang for a hot, tingling broth to wash away the day's fatigue!

  • Spicy galbitang: ₩17,000

After a short wait, the galbitang came out bubbling in stone pots, and the sight of it nearly dropped both our jaws 😲

You immediately understand why it's called meat-packed lol. A huge short rib bone sits under a mountain of tender aronsatae (beef shank), and the portion is no joke! The aronsatae had zero toughness — dipped into the special soy-mustard sauce, it just melts away 🤍 There's also a generous amount of crisp bean sprouts deep in the broth, giving it a rich flavor with a really clean finish! Piling chewy glass noodles, sprouts, and tender meat together like a little combo, I couldn't stop eating ✨

That red broth alone was mouthwatering — the spicy galbitang! The meat on the thick rib bones was so well braised that just a light nudge with chopsticks separated the meat cleanly from the bone 👏

The broth was hot and deep without any heaviness — one spoonful in and I let out an involuntary 'ahh, today's fatigue is melting away!' lol. Pouring in a bowl of rice and topping it with the house-made seokbakji made it an absolute rice thief 🔥

Taking home two bags of barley gangjeong, paid for out of pocket

With the rib bones carrying so much solid meat and the broth so perfect, we finished patting our full bellies thinking, that was a proper dinner! lol. Between the unlimited rice and the dessert-like snacks, it was thoroughly filling. And the barley gangjeong from the self-serve corner was so crisp and sweetly nutty that I couldn't stop eating it lol.

In the end, I paid for two bags of barley gangjeong at the counter myself and carried them home with both hands full! 🛍️ Now whenever I get a little hungry at home, I grab some — and it's no secret I've already demolished half a bag, hehe.

If you're near Hoegi Station or Kyung Hee University looking for a hot, filling restaurant for dinner, or a spot to eat alone, definitely check out Hoegi Wang Galbitang! And when you go, don't forget to properly polish off the galbitang along with the barley gangjeong and misugaru 🤍
