In short
Hoegi Wang Galbitang is a galbitang (beef short rib soup) restaurant near Exit 1 of Hoegi Station in Dongdaemun, Seoul, in the university area around Kyung Hee University and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Even with a stroller there was plenty of room to sit, and the wongi-hoebok (energy-boosting) galbitang at 16,000 won and the meat-heavy aronsatae galbitang at 19,000 won came with a clean broth full of bean sprouts and house-made seokbakji (radish kimchi). The 17-grain misugaru (roasted grain drink) at the self-serve bar alone is reason enough to come back to Hoegi Wang Galbitang.

I'd been here a few times before with my husband, but it had been a while, so I stopped by this Hoegi Station favorite, Hoegi Wang Galbitang, again. It was just as good as I remembered — clean, savory broth, refreshing seokbakji (radish kimchi), and rich, thick misugaru (roasted grain drink) for dessert that tastes like something grandma would make!
Where is Hoegi Wang Galbitang, is there parking, and can you bring a stroller?
Hoegi Wang Galbitang is a short walk from Exit 1 of Hoegi Station. It's also right in the university district near Kyung Hee University and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, so it's always crowded whenever I go.

There was a bit of a wait that day too — you write your name on the waiting list at the entrance and get seated in order. We had our stroller with us, and there was still plenty of room to sit.
For reference, there's parking for about two cars in front of the restaurant, but it's not very generous. And for a novice driver like me, having to pull up onto the sidewalk in front of the shop to parallel park was... a challenge. Just a heads-up that parking here takes some skill!

Inside Hoegi Wang Galbitang and what is on the self-serve bar
The inside of Hoegi Wang Galbitang has a clean interior and is quite spacious, with group seating available, so it works for larger parties too.

At the self-serve bar you can grab extra rice and side dishes, and there's even boricrackers (barley candy) ready for dessert.

The side dishes include napa cabbage kimchi, seokbakji (radish kimchi), and deodeok (mountain herb root) namul. The seokbakji especially is house-made, which makes it even more refreshing and delicious. It pairs so well with the galbitang that refills are a must!

And the misugaru you absolutely have to have for dessert...! Honestly, one reason Hoegi Wang Galbitang randomly pops into my head sometimes is because of this misugaru — it's so rich and delicious, like something a grandmother would mix up for you. This is Hoegi Wang Galbitang, the Hoegi Station favorite that even has 17-grain misugaru on the self-serve bar.

Just so you know, there's a restroom inside the restaurant!

Hoegi Wang Galbitang menu and prices
Hoegi Wang Galbitang's menu has four types of galbitang, plus braised short ribs (galbi-jjim) besides the soups.

You order comfortably from a kiosk right at your table. We ordered the wongi-hoebok galbitang and the meat-heavy aronsatae galbitang. If you've got a big appetite, I'd recommend the extra-large galbitang or the meat-heavy galbitang instead haha.

If you take part in the Naver receipt review event, you can also get a free bag of boricrackers. Since it's a restaurant in a university district, it's a total bargain!

Honest review: the clean galbitang broth with bean sprouts
Two piping hot bowls of galbitang arrive...! The meat-heavy galbitang has two rib pieces plus a really generous amount of meat haha.

A few pieces of meat my husband shared with me haha. Hoegi Wang Galbitang's galbitang stands out for its clean broth. If you like clean broth paired with refreshing kimchi, this galbitang will suit your taste.

It's been simmered so long that the meat is incredibly tender. Even the big rib bones come apart easily with just a few snips of the kitchen scissors.

With all the meat trimmed and ready to eat, we dug in! There's glass noodles in the broth, and interestingly, bean sprouts too. I wondered if the bean sprouts were what gave the broth that extra clean taste haha.

We were too full for the boricrackers, so we each just had a cup of misugaru for dessert — and it was just as rich and delicious as ever, ugh. Writing this post is making me crave it again... Hoegi Wang Galbitang is a place I want to visit often just for the misugaru haha.

Final thoughts on Hoegi Wang Galbitang
Hoegi Wang Galbitang, the Hoegi Station favorite, has that unusual touch of bean sprouts that makes the broth even cleaner and tastier. Paired with the house-made seokbakji, it's absolutely delicious, and with boricrackers and grandma-style misugaru for dessert, it's a total bargain of a restaurant.
