Those of you who travel to Sokcho often — do you ever catch yourselves always going to the same restaurant, always ordering the same thing?!

I visit Sokcho a lot myself, and once I fixate on a place I tend to go back over and over, so sometimes it gets a bit boring 🥱

So this time I wanted something a little different. Gangwon-do is pretty famous for jangkalguksu, but I'd hardly ever properly tried Sokcho jangkalguksu, so I decided to make it this trip's lunch!

Today's spot is called Sokcho Haemul Kkot Jangkalguksu (속초해물꽃장칼국수), and there's a spacious dedicated parking lot right beside the restaurant, so I could park easily without worrying about it at all 🚗

When we first arrived, there were so many people out front that I panicked, thinking there was a wait — but it turned out to be a group just finishing their meal and leaving, and we'd arrived after the lunch peak had passed, which was such a relief that it wasn't crowded inside.

The reason I cared so much was that we were visiting with our dog, and I couldn't help worrying that too many people might make things uncomfortable for her 😂

After booking ahead through Naver Reservation, our table was already set when we arrived. Since we always travel with our dog, whether a place is dog-friendly matters most to us wherever we go — and this place not only allows dogs but also had great reviews, and honestly the visuals alone won me over instantly with no hesitation 💡

They even had a dedicated cage and a dog stroller for dogs, and on top of that, they gave us boiled sweet potato as a treat for our pup — my heart just melted..🫶 As a dog owner, this next-level pet-friendly service already won me over before I'd even tasted the food, haha 💯

There's also a more budget-friendly bracken and sanghwang mushroom seafood hot pot jangkalguksu, but since we'd come all this way, we ordered the restaurant's signature special revitalizing seafood flower platter shabu jangkalguksu for two.

True to the "revitalizing" name, it even came with precious ginseng, which made me think this would be a great dish to bring parents or elders to 👍

Side dishes: geotjeori and baek kimchi, refillable at the self-serve bar

The default side dishes are geotjeori kimchi (freshly seasoned cabbage kimchi) and baek kimchi (white kimchi) — the geotjeori pairs wonderfully with the jangkalguksu, while the baek kimchi is refreshingly clean, perfect for cleansing the palate between bites 👏👏

If you run low, there's a self-serve bar set up on one side of the restaurant where you can help yourself to more.

How are the abalone and beef in the seafood shabu shabu?

The main dish arrived shortly after — a generous platter piled high with fresh seafood, meant to be enjoyed course-style, in the ideal eating order 😊

The seafood was so fresh that the abalone actually wriggled the moment the heat touched it!! 🐚

The beef that came with it was so clean and free of any gamey smell, and so savory, that I mistook it for chadolbagi (thinly sliced beef brisket) rather than the usu-samgyeopsal (thin beef belly slices) I expected!

After enjoying the shabu shabu, we finished with the kalguksu noodles included in the base set.

Jangkalguksu often has such a strong fermented soybean paste flavor that the broth ends up heavy or salty, but this broth wasn't heavy at all — it was pure and clean!

And as we ate the shabu shabu, the meat juices, vegetable essence, and seafood aroma all steeped into the broth, so it kept getting deeper, more refreshing, and richer as we went 👏👏

There was even a small spoon built into the lid, so it was easy to dig in right away. After all that hot kalguksu, I really needed something cold and refreshing, and this Baskin Robbins ice cream gave the perfect finishing touch!
