My parents and I hadn't been able to take a summer trip together, so we recently went on a two-day trip to Sokcho with my parents and my kid. Near Oeongchi Beach we visited Sokcho Haemul Kkot Jangkalguksu, a well-known jangkalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) spot in Sokcho, and the lunch there was so satisfying that I'm leaving this review!

We stopped here for our last meal before heading home, after touring around Sokcho with my seafood-loving parents and even dipping our feet in the water a little.

What the 75,000 won seafood platter for 3 looks like on a reserved table

Since we'd reserved ahead through Naver, the table was already set up for us and everything was easy to enjoy. On the table were kalguksu, side dishes, the kalguksu broth, and a mini ginseng root. What we'd pre-ordered was the vitality-boosting special seafood platter shabu kalguksu for 3, ₩75,000.

They said the ginseng root given to us helps with recovering vitality, and kindly explained we could eat the whole thing, leaves and all, so we each ate one whole before starting the meal ^^ It felt like being pampered — a nice experience!

Blue crab, abalone and octopus on the seafood platter

Beyond what was already set out, the seafood platter arrived with vegetables, seafood, and meat too — a jaw-dropping spread that made me think, we picked the right jangkalguksu spot in Sokcho.

Seeing big chunky crab, all sorts of shellfish, abalone, squid, and octopus piled high on one platter made my mouth water, haha. And since it was a Sokcho restaurant we got to enjoy with my parents, it was all the more satisfying.

We boiled the clams first and picked them out one by one as they opened up, and lightly blanched the squid and octopus so they wouldn't get too chewy. Cooking these generous ingredients in the broth without holding back made the whole meal feel truly hearty.

How the broth tastes, plus three whole abalones

The broth was spicy and full of umami, and even just sipping it was delicious. It was the kind of broth you couldn't help but finish with noodles at the end ^^ And the abalone in this Sokcho jangkalguksu — three of them, still alive and wriggling — we carefully split them among us, one each, and it truly felt like a health boost *^^*

With chewy seafood like this, it would've paired perfectly with a drink, but since I had to drive home, I held back and just ate the kalguksu ^^

Beyond the seafood, the blanched meat shabu was so good too~~ If my parents were on team seafood, I was on team meat, haha. The meat was really delicious — soft and melting shabu goodness~~~ This part is the real deal.

The finishing touch of Sokcho jangkalguksu is of course the noodles!! When they add the kalguksu noodles and boil them up again — oh, but these noodles were genuinely springy and chewy in a way that felt different from other places. My parents also complimented how good these noodles were. Maybe that distinctive noodle texture is what defines Sokcho kalguksu?

It was a shame we couldn't finish with the porridge rice at the end, but we were just too full ㅠ_ㅠ Apparently you can finish with a porridge that's a real specialty, so if you're going, pace your appetite accordingly.
